1970s Song Title Contest

I’m working on a project that had me looking for songs from a half century ago. Thought it might be fun to use them for inspiration to host a poetry contest .

Choose any song (or two) from the list & PM me - I’ll mark it taken. Get your entries to me by 22 April and I’ll post them for voting & comments.
For a better experience, Youtube the song you choose before you write the poem. However, there’s no restriction on what you write about, so long as you tie in the title.

    Still available:
Dancing in the Moonlight (King Harvest)
Everybody Plays the Fool (the Main Ingredient)
Hooked on a Feeling (Blue Swede)
I'll Take You There (the Staple Singers)

Eight taken, but a ninth needs to make a second choice as I had not updated the site to show the first choice had already been taken.
How about giving me you first two choices & if the first is taken you get the second. If you want both that's alright, too.

Ten gone already & two are making alternative choices (theirs were taken).
When I get multiple requests the first PM to me is the one I go by.

One avid music lover pointed out that Santana's Black Magic Woman is a cover of Fleetwood Mac's from 1969.
True, but I compiled my list from releases of the 70's, so Carlos got the nod. There are other covers included.

    Songs are very inspiring.

A simple line from a song has inspired many things I've written.

Songs are essentially poems to music. It's not surprising it's been successful.

Think you should perhaps do it on a regular basis. Once every couple of months or something.

    Regards

    Craig

Me too. I think a lot of people are inspired by songs, myself included so I think this should be pretty fantastic.

Uuhhhmmm did inadvertently do that? Whoops.

I wouldn't know where to start lol

  • Liz replied to CJ Maleney

Lol it's not too hard. You can use song titles as prompts or pictures, paintings, themes or titles you come up with. Anything really. The site used to have a few contests a week! Don't be scared lol

    Still awaiting 6 poems

Someone actually "claimed" a remaining poem by sending in the completed entry!

    Last Full day tomorrow....

Ideas would be easy but it's the admin behind it that I would struggle with.

You could always ask for someone to co-host with you. Larry and I ran one a good few years ago (if the damn forum search was still working I could find the link for you). Basically Larry did all the hard lifting and I just batted my lashes haha!!!

I have been waiting all week!

    Humph!
    Batted your lashes, did you?!?!?!
Hellon, you stole my cat and my Akubra, gave away all the cool stuff in my storage box & gave me back my hat in a decidedly worse state than you took it (the cat apparently peed in it).
Still, due to all your pizzazz we set the record for non-club-contest participants @ 25.

It was a form-poem contest in 3 rounds with each round requiring progressively harder types of forms.

Our poor judges each had to wade through 25 poems the first round when we told them to expect around 10.

Did we really get 25 participants? I couldn't remember! I do remember we had a lot of laughs along the way and I'd give free 'gifts' stolen from your shed as little incentives haha!! the catch praise 'But wait, there's more" comes to mind but I can't remember how many years ago since we ran it? It seems yonks ago now :)

I think that contest was 5 years ago? I was a judge....That was so difficult to judge....Really a fun contest!

Where and when do they get posted?

  • Larry Chamberlin
7 years ago, updated 7 years ago

    Glad you asked, Tony.

There are so many entries (24) that I'm going to do this in three stages.

First I'll post 12 poems and let people vote on them (10 for their top poem, 7 for second and 4 for third.

I'll set those aside and post the other twelve and let the votes commence.

Then I'll take the top five poems from each group and post them for a runoff vote. Winners will be in a new thread along with disclosure of authors.

[NOTE: Yes, Andrea, Michael D Nalley & Lonely Rider were judges back then and I had so much respect for all of you sticking with the program to the finish!]

    EDIT: Hah! Found one thread:

I wonder if you would remember who entered Larry? The poems on the thread you provided are really good and, it's a pity I can't remember who the authors were.

I can't remember if I ever thanked Andrea, Michael and LR...you did a great job judging the whole contest, with so many great poems to choose from, it couldn't have been easy :)

    EDIT

I actually found the original thread haha!!

    http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/threads/133717

So you see Craig, it's not really that hard...just have sticky fingers and a co-host willing to crunch the numbers and do ALL the heavy lifting :)

I just noticed that there doesn't seem to be a P&Q clock indicating the exact time of the previous post...how do we know the time in P&Q land now?

  • hiraeth replied to Hellon

    You don't D:

    It's on EST though.

I'll add it to the 'to-do list' for Janis, we should have a clock somewhere, to make communicating with members easy. :)

edit: i lied its on utc time.

  • Hellon replied to hiraeth

OK..got it I think...for the moment P&Q land is exactly 12 hours behind me here in Perth Australia...does EST have daylight saving?

  • hiraeth replied to Hellon
