Shut up, be happy!

Everyone is sad at some point in there lifes. I think it's selfish for people to be sad all the time, it's not fair to their friends or family or to themselves. So itstead of dwelling on all the crappy parts of your life, just think of the happy ones and try to be happier. You don't need to cut, take depression pills, or attempt suicide to be happy. All you need to be is who you truely want to be. I'm not trying to say you're going to be happy 24/7 but just don't let the bad things bother you do bad. I'm in no way a happy person, but I try to be and I think it helps....

Sometimes it helps to let your emothions out on this site where barely anyone knows you, Cutting can be an addictiona and depression is a medical condition

People don't cut or take antidepressants 'to be happy', they do them to cope with how they feel. If only it was so easy that you could just be your true self, many ppl dont have the guts to just be themselves because of how society will judge them. Its a tough world, and it takes courage to step out and not let anyone put you down. A lot easier said than done.

Some people may dwell on sad thoughts...but remember just because someone is depressed/has depression, it doesn't mean they dwell on sad thoughts all the time, or have dwelled on sad thoughts to get where they are. Depression is an illness like any other. You can't just 'shut up and be happy' and you can't just snap out of it. But yes, some positive thinking does help...

Some people can't be happy all of the time because they suffer from depression, like myself. I am happy when I hear jokes or when I am busy with something. I put forth effort to make myself happy and I try not to use excuses when doing so. I now have to take depression medication and see a phychiatrist. Not all people are unhappy because they wanna be. Some times focusing on the good parts of life aren't enough to cover the bad. Some people live with family members who absue them verbally or physcially. I don't think that focusing on good things in life are all that they need. Like Toni said, people don't take anti depressants and things to make them happy they do it to help cope. I believe that depression is a personal thing and many views are correct. It's really a personal opinion.

Just thinking about the happy things in your life doesn't make the sad and depressing things go away.

    Katie Marie:
Usually I would go crazy on you considering that this is such an incredibly idiotic statement, but you obviously don't understand and I used to think that way, So I'll let you go.

(Sidenote: you might be speaking of people who ACT depressed all the time, for attention. Note that the following post is about those who truly feel pain, or conciel it for their own knowledge alone.)

I always thought that people can't be sad all the time, that they can get over things if they force themselves to, but that was in sixth grade so I have somewhat of an excuse as to why I thought so stupidly.

There are things that happen in people's lives that are emotional scars that will never heal. Some include: child abuse, emotional abuse, death of a loved one, and in my opinion the deepest scar-rape.
These scars linger with people as time progresses and sometimes even grow. Time can either be a healing measure, or infection.
(Not to mention those that still go through the abuse and pain)

A person cannot merely decide to forget the tragedies that have taken place in their lives, therefor they continue to feel pain and anguish, and sometimes this is for the better.

Some people actually crave the pain and yearn it because such events that can take place in peoples lives can leave them numb without a sense of feeling, so to feel pain is to feel human. This also is related to why people cut or take pills, to feel when they have a sense of numbness and don't feel real anymore.

Also, if it were not for this pain, some of the most incredible masterpieces of artwork wouldn't have been created.

Ok to the Katie Marie chick, you do realise alot of stuff has happened to people and that's why they're sad. I'm not saying you can never be happy but some people have had it hard, like i'm using an example; me, i have had it pretty hard for eight years straight, i was sad for them eight years. Well more than sad, deeply depressed but yeah it took me them eight years to get over everything that happened because it just kept happening, i'm happy now but it took eight years. So you just can't expect to tell people to be happy with a simple post.

Sadness: An excuse to not see past your troubles and get over the hurdles everyone faces.
