Cyclists On The Road

Just a random topic after my drive to work this morning and nearly killed a cyclist! Completely not my fault, but was just curious on others thoughts in relation to this topic...

I understand they are saving the environment and the like but its really (in my view) and the expense of their own safety. I think they should use the bike paths (in Australia - not sure how it is over the rest of the world) for their own safety - as my mum put it - "its like going into a gun fight with a knife" they really stand no chance when they are on a push bike and a motor vehicle crashes into them...

Open to everyone's opinions what do you guys think?

yeah but do they ride all over the main road there?

See another debate Im having with my colleagues (who happen to be fanatical cyclists) that if they are making "bike lanes" and such on the main roads that vehicles drive in, then just like a vehicle they should pay the $600 registration to be on the road and for general government road maintenance. The same way I have to pay to register my vehicle to drive it on the road - anyone up for an opinion?

I thought bikes could also be ridden on the main road. At least in the city its common.

I knwo they can be rode on the main roads, but does anyone understand my point of saying they are not safe riding on our roads, they should use bike paths - it drives me nuttttttttttts!

I live in Alberta Canada, I hardly ever see cyclists on the roads...

Maybe its because over half our year is Winter...

I'm with you Eirisa.... Here in Michigan, USA, some of our roads have a "bike lane" which is just an extra line painted on the main road showing the bike where to be... but there is nothing protecting them from the cars. And where I encounter them most is on semi-country roads where the shoulder is dirt, so they are actually riding in the car lane. The one route where I used to see them all the time was very hilly and curvy... so you couldn't get over far enough to pass them because you couldn't see if there was oncoming traffic.

I don't begrudge them their right to bike (as I know you do not either) I just wish there could be some kind of safer place for them to be.

I agree JPm spanex Cyclists and men in speedos should be illegal LMAO ;OD

Ann Marie thankyou! Finally someone seeing from my perspective, our "bike lanes" seem very similar to yours and it just irritates me that by them being at such high risk so to am I....

Well where I live the few "bike lanes" there are, people just walk in them anyway, and you may judging this by one or two people who have been unsafe. My mum cycles to work everyday and has to use the roads because there is no other way. I think cyclists have just as much right to use the roads as much as cars, after all there are just as bad car drivers out there. xxx

P.s. No, she does not wear spandex.
