"Lies and truths are based on what society accepts or doesn’t accept; 2 + 2 = 4… why is this ‘truth’? SOCIETY says it is."

Such a statement cannot be said. Those numbers are representative of values. If we were to go by that logic, how do you spell, "bat?" Is it really,
b-a-t? I guess we don't know, because that's what SOCIETY tells us, eh? -_-

"Lies CAN be truths, just to those that announce them."

A lie, by definiton, is the absence of truth.

"If I say “Life is hardest on me because such and such things have happened and so and so did this!” to me, this would be ‘truth’, to you, it would be a lie."

How so? That doesn't make any sense. If it's a lie in one aspect at all, it cannot be accepted as any kind of truth.

"Lying in the sense that someone ‘makes up’ something is not necessarily wrong; would you rather be told your boyfriend/girlfriend/brother/sister/best friend was killed through acts of torture and gradual decapitations, or, that they died peacefully, quick, painlessly with a bullet to the head…?"

Would I like a lie, or the truth? I'd rather want the truth. If I was told a lie about something like that, that only shows that the liar doesn't think I can accept the truth. The truth hurts, but if we live our lives in complete ignorance, then we wouldn't get many things done.

"People, who are straight forward, blunt and tell the direct ‘truth’ will always hurt more than those that lie."

I beg to differ. If someone lies to you, and you find out, I can garuntee that you would be more hurt, than if they just told you the truth right off hand.

"It is those that suck at lying that give it such a bad name and reputation."

Oh, so now there is a group of you people? Goody.
    -_-

But seriously, if everyone told the truth, instead of trying to lie about everything, things would be a lot smoother. People who lie about the simplest things can do more damage, than help. Even if you lie to "protect" someone, you can do more damage to them that way. How can I say that?

Look at cheating on girlfriends and boyfriends, or affairs. In these relationships, someone is going to have to do a lot of lying, so they don't "hurt" their mate. Of course, in the end, it's always bound to unravel somehow, and more damage is done to someone, than had the truth been told in the first place.

See, if you lie about something, you will inevitably have to lie about somethign else, and things will only get heavier. Then, inevitably, things will come crashing down.

Let's bring it down to a more common level. Would you want someone to lie to you about your poem, saying, "This is awesome!" when in reality, it sucks terribly? In such an event, you will continue writing sucky poems, never getting any better, because of that lie. And then people like JustPlainMe come up to you, tell you your poem sucks, and you need to do something to it, and you ignore them.

The truth hurts, get over it. Lies hurt even more.

    Well said lipton

    oh an another thing.....

1 lie leads to another.....and another.....and another...and another.......which in the end ...... a little white lie ...will accumalate and the result of which will just cause the recipient to lose trust in that person....and will always effect the relationship they has with that person..whether is just friendship or more

also........ i rather live in truth...then live a lie.......

I soooo know what you're talking about! I just found out that a friend of mine lied to me about something pretty important. She totally made up this story just to make me upset. She did it on purpose out of jealousy, but she doesn't know that I know. Liars piss me the fuck off.

    tEys:

"Lipton, u jsut proved how society controls our idea of truths and lies; "by DEFINITIOIN a lie is..."

You're arguing with things that cannot be argued with. The word TRUTH means what is real. The word (to) LIE means to give something other than the truth. If we were to go by your logic, then what does, "to kiss" really mean? What about "to write?" or "to hit?" Words are representative of everything. You can't just sit there and question the mere essence and definition of words. It's futile and a waste of time.

There is no such thing as a liar so good that he is never found out. I have never, in my entire life, seen a liar get away with lying. Somehow, somewhere, he gets found out. Even if he somehow doesn't, then it's still brought on him somehow. People will see him lying (it is inevitable) and he will get the reputation of a pathological liar, and no one will want to be around him, because he can't keep to what's real and what's going on.

Pity how you think lying about everything makes the world a better place. Look at Hitler.

"Everyone without blonde hair and blue eyes should be killed because they are an inferior race!"

See how well lying works? You get things like the Holocaust. Of course, that's taking it to an extreme.

And of course a lie can make one feel content. It's because they don't know what's REALLY going on. It's called, "false sense of security."

"and ur statements of how to spell bat is exactly rite! the perfect example of spelling being accepted is chat room speech; u all under stand wot words im using dont you? but im not spelling the societies MAIN accepted way now hmm?"

This statement makes no logical argument. I'm sorry, "chatroom speech," as you call it, shouldn't even be considered anything higher than someone's lame attempt to talk to someone else. Not even should it be called a form of language.
By the way, it makes you look ignorant, less intelligent, and unable to use a keyboard if you type in "chatroom speech."

    In fact:
"if u read more carefully, u would understand that i said a good liar can get out of nay situation without being "found out."

I can easily negate this statement, using what you said. See the "word" you replaced "anyway" with? Yeah, the word, "nay" "Nay" means:
    Noun form:
    1 : DENIAL, REFUSAL
    2 a : a negative reply or vote b : one who votes no
    Adverbial form:
    1. NO
Etymology: Middle English, from Old Norse nei, from ne not + ei ever —more at NO, AYE

    (© 2001 by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated
    Merriam-Webster Privacy Policy)

Also, the use of "chatroom talk" makes you look ignorant, because you have "nay" idea what you are talking about.

Again, 2 is a representative value. 4 is a representative value. It wouldn't matter if we used the word "fish" instead of 2, and "cow" instead of 4. Fish + Fish would then equal cow.

These content feelings you speak of are FALSE feelings. How would you like it if everyone lied to you, just to make you feel better? You would like that, wouldn't you?

Again, I put this down to a more common level. If you had a girlfriend, and you did something that she may not necessarily like, would you expect her to lie about it, just to make you feel better? Eventually, she'd get fed up with you, and leave you.

People that can't take or give the hardcore truth are weak. It's as simple as that. You must be able to admit that.

Ashley I think they both know what they are talking about - their perspective are just different and they are just making hella more complicated than it is - all this compelxity of language is doing my head in LoL But is stimluating my thought all the same :o)

Lies Truth Truth Lies - Who cares how boring and offensive would life be without lies? Shit I know better than anyone how much the truth can hurt - sometimes people, myself included don't want the truth...plus unfortunately I believe to lie is part of our nature - whether its a tiny "No your butt looks tiny in those pants" lies or a more serious life changing lie - people have always done it, and will always do it until the end of time...

Sorry about getting technical with the language... I was trying to prove a point... =/

Anyway, yes, people will lie... But, as far as I know, that's not what tEys and I are discussing.

Thanks Lipton I had to read things over a few times to gain an understanding but I get like that too when Im trying to prove a point and you made some very valid points...seems to me tho you guys seem to be discussing what is a lie and what is truth not which is better - i could have misinterpreted Lipton and please correct me if I did so - I have no doubt you will :o)

    Ah, Eirisa.

To tell the truth, I can't say. My brain just died instantaneously about five minutes ago... I was typing a sentence here in the forums and...

What was I saying? I lost my train of thought...

I think I'm done for the night... it's only 10PM though. >( oh well....

hmm... compulsive lying. I don't lie anymore but, when i was like 8-13 I was unstoppable. I made up boyfriends, friends, things I did in the weekend, things to make my real BF jealous... I hate that I was like that. i don't know if that's compulsive lying or childish attention seeking habit though...
