To those who think correcting spelling is cool...

    reality check: it's lame...
do you guys have nothing better to do withyour time then correct spelling? If that is the case I suggest you pursue a career in spellchecking and leave the rest of us in peace

and dont even try to tell me poetry is associated with english and that spelling is too because thats just a lame excuse. most of us dont mis-spell something in such a hurry that it is unreadable so just leave it at that ok?

you forgot to put a space between 'with' and 'your' and you forgot to put ' in the word don't and you need a comma before 'ok?'

I p*ssing well hate people that correct other peoples spellings! You all know what was meant to be said...because you have the brain power to work it out and correct it. What do you really think is going to come of correcting someone else's spelling?

Sorry to say, but, "typing lyke tihs," makes you look:
    1) Stupid/not intelligent
    2) Like you can't use a keyboard, referring back to stupidity

I mean, can you not spell out, "you," or "be," or "anyone?"

And I have come across plenty of people that type SO badly like this, I can't understand them. No one, could understand them.

I find spelling necessary as well.

    HAHAHA.

Memorandum to All: Not only are poetry and English ASSOCIATED, but they hinge upon each other ENTIRELY. Without English (depending on which language you are writing in, of course) there could not BE poetry, so saying that they are not associated is perhaps the most idiotic statement I have heard on P&Q,
    ever,
that having been said, it has been my experience that people who can use English well write MUCH better poetry than those who cannot.

And if you really think about it, it's not that we have nothing better to do with our time than spell check, it is that if we are going to spend our time on message boards and we notice a spelling error it takes no time at all to point it out. The time is actually wasted trying to dissect the slop and make sense of it than is spent ACTUALLY correcting the spelling mistake.

I know that I am a much better speller because of the "spellcheckers" on P&Q, and I am grateful for the positive development that they offer me. I wont get anywhere in life by having mediocre English and spelling skills, so although it may be a pain in the ass to be corrected all the time, I cant say that it is detrimental to anything other than your ego.

"I [anyone] wont get anywhere in life by having mediocre English and spelling skills, so although it may be a pain in the ass to be corrected all the time, I cant say that it is detrimental to anything other than your ego."

It makes you grow and gives you better skills.

Good luck getting anyone to stop.

Don't take it in a bad way when someone corrects your spelling, they just want to understand you, and you can learn from your mistakes and become better at your grammar.

Typing like this: "haii wuzzup? ow cud u undrrstnd tiz?"

That's really hard to read. Don't you think you want people to understand you more clearly?

It also reflects on how intelligent you are. You can be a really smart person, but lazy and decide to type in that way. In the other hand, people do judge you that way and it gets annoying when people type like that. So they will be annoyed by you.

I do think that spelling IS neccesary, and you guys should stop complaining about others correcting you. It doesn't matter if you are not in school or not. Don't be immature and act like an idiot.

But I don't think this thread was originally posted about correcting of slang language, more of people correcting single words that people had spelled incorrectly. Am I right?

  • Andriana

It's like that, but it's people who spell incorrectly ON PURPOSE. There's a difference there. Instead of accidentally. It's just lack of intelligence. :)

Ok, I am a perfectionist. Misspelling things is like, a pet peeve. You know how some people hate it when other people crack their knuckles or chew their gum super loud? Misspelling bugs me. I try not to overdo it, but, sometimes... Like, the person who started all this. It bugged me when I saw "misspellings" misspelled. I don't know... Some people appreciate correction, you know. It's not one-sided.

    Hehe, Matt, nice comment...

    Kids kids kids...

people like JPM and Friends are pointing out your grammtical errors so that you learn. If you do not heed their words then you will not improve as a poet.

  • Bret Higgins

I prefer JPM's strategy.. being shamed into correcting ourselves is a very effecive strategy.

i personally dont care if people mis-spell words, but it does get very, very annoying when poeple spell words using less letters, or in replace of other letters. such as the way Mc writes. in my opinion, it is just annoying.

i think the poem is easier to read when its spelt correctly. why dont YOU get a reality check and realize that people dont care what you think about spelling (note to the person who started this)

Oh dear you asked for it with this post hun

I know its frustrating but how are you ever supposed to learn if you're not corrected?

Spell badly and you should be corrected - actually amongst the masses here you should be hanged...

    LoL

  • Kaitlin Kristina

People remember things when they are made a fool or public spectacle of.

The way that Friends~ and JPM correct spelling errors makes you remember it, it's a good behavior modifier in actuality.

The more cocky someone is the more they need to be made a fool of, the more humble and sensitive people are the less they need someone to point it out, they are more receptive to criticism and they remember it easily because they are easily self conscious. If someone corrects your spelling errors and you spout off with "WHAT THE F*** DO YOU F****** PEOPLE NT HAVE A LIFE!!! I DONNT GIVE A FLYING F*** IF I SPELTD IT WRONG, IT MEENS NOTHIN AND MAH POETRY IS OFF DA CHAIN, DONT MATTER IF I CANT SPELLL FO SH**" If only makes it worse and people will make more of a fool of you than you already made of yourself.

Hey, get over yourself. Did you ever think that maybe we find it exceedingly annoying when you're having an argument with someone and they don't seem to have the intelligence to spell correctly?

I know you are trying to bash the people who correct your stupidity, but maybe you should take spelling hints instead of complaining about them

btw-this is a pointless post. Never should have been started.

I think spelling is a MUST. My dad works as a manager and he told me he nor any of the other managers at stores would hire someone whose application looked horrible.

Special tips for those of you who can't spell
    1. Get a good dictionary and learn to spell
    2. Be suprised at how much better you feel about yourself
    3. Realize that you don't need to be embarrassed that you couldn't spell
    4. See how much easier it is to get a job
    5. Realize how much easier it is to get into and through college
    6. Don't feel bad if you make little mistakes no one is perfect. Those who spell very well should not put down those who can't spell as good as them. However, every one should make an effort to learn to spell.

But seriously, people. Trying to read this:

"hi evry1 im so kool. i rite peotry on her. i tihnk my peoms r teh best. i rite 4 my gramma."

is like trying to decipher Egyptian, without any sort of reference. Well, maybe not THAT hard, but it is a bit difficult. Now, you MIGHT call your "grandma," "gramma," but that's not the point, so, please look past that.

Raise your hand if you LIKE looking stupid.

I not only despise bad grammar and spelling because you can't read it, but because if you're having a serious, intellectual chat with someone, you want to keep it, well, intellectual.

Imagine trying to have a serious debate with another member and their giving you their argument. Can you really take them seriously when they're writing LeEeke dIz?

I used to actually type like that, until someone insulted me. Which was a long, long time ago. And I realized that it affected my grammar in school too. Also, I don't want to look stupid too. So, yeah.

  • Anne Conner

Katlin- I'm working on my grammar. Usually it's much better, but I just got back from vacation. I know this is going to sound wierd, but I'm tired. LOL

Lipton- You are right. It is hard for people to understand gibberish like that. I'm so thankful most people don't spell like that. Even I'm not that bad.

Really people! Why do some of us spell like that? Have we lost all our self respect?
