Some people don't like that because it's not someone that they know, and if they have a trust problem in their life, then they aren't going to open up to some stranger.

For me, it's easier to open slowly to someone that I don't know, and know that if I want to, I can get rid of them. It really helped me when I started going to see a counselor. I hated it at first because I too thought that she was just full of it and wanting the money, but looking back at it, she really did just listen to me.

She told me different things that I could to help from cutting myself and a lot of them worked.

I guess that it really has to do with your mind set. If you want to talk to one, and want to be helped, then you'll think they're great.....in a way....

But if you go in, saying that they aren't going to understand you, they're going to judge, I don't want to be here, then no. They arne't going to seem like they're helping or anything.

Them working out, depends on whether or not YOU want them too.

I think someone else might of said that already as well....oh well....whatever....

Teys, stop acting like u kno everything. (thats my job)

Psychiatrists, psychologists, councillors all have related jobs that overlap, there isnt those clear distinctions. The only distinction in effect is that psychiatrists have medical degrees and therefore can prescribe drugs. The reasons psychiatrists get a lot of people with mental defects is because they are the most likely to need drugs.

As to why they are scary... they just are. They are never to be trusted, and they will ruin your life.

it really depends on the psychiatrist. i've had my share of them; i've hated some, loved some... it all depends on who you like and who helps you, really

Well, to actually help some one, a psychologist/counselor needs to have quite a bit of empathy (the ability to see things from another's perspective without bias from your own). I know this because I possess a large amount of empathy, and I want to be a clinical psychologist or a counselor. The reason that psychologists/counselors and psychiatrists are stigmatized as bad is because of most people (like Distant Fate) think that they are only in it for the money. For most (not all, though) that is not the truth. One doesn't go into a profession like that without the intent of helping those in need (most of the time). You just have to remember that not all psychologists/counselors possess the necessary amount of empathy that they should have for the job. Therefore, they are not the best at helping other's solve there problems, though, they might try. That's my opinion on the matter.

Errr, i really can't understand why anyone would have a problem with a counseller. I see mine once a week and it's the best thing I've ever done. I havn't cut for two months now since I've been seeing him, Yay!
    Just my opinion.
