Sick of complainers

Who made all of these people who complain about bad spelling and simple poems experts on poetry, grammar and the English language to begin with? I see so many threads starting off with "Is it just me or..." No it's not just you, but what are you trying to prove? Do you know why people post simple poems? Do you know why some people can't spell? Do you know why some people only like posting a certain type of poem like love? No, you assume it's because they don't know as much as you, but you're wrong. People come here to express themselves. That’s why all poets, song writers, novelist, columnists, screenplay writers, etc write. So get over yourself. If you don't like a certain style of poetry, skip it. You don't need to come here and get attention by posting your distain for it.

There are a lot of young people who are still in school that post on this website, and their spelling and grammar might not match yours, get over it.

I've spotted two glaring mistakes in the above post. can you spot anymore?

I don't care if I misspelled something... my point still stands.

Oh, and I also spotted one in yours, can you point it out?

There you go oddyball; so quick to jump on the bandwagon you say you detest! You've just deconstructed your own argument. Well done.

haha, ok I have to give that one to you... got me BIG time. Well hey, it's all in good spirit I say.

    You're complaining about people complaining.

Yeah I am. Is it ironic? Yes. Does that mean I have no point? No. How clever of you to point out the obvious, would you like a cookie?

  • Lipton

Yes, I would love a cookie.

"Who made all of these people who complain about bad spelling and simple poems experts on poetry, grammar and the English language to begin with?"

No one. Most people are here to improve their writing skills. Besides, this is a writing site. Why shouldn't there be proper spelling and grammar?

"I see so many threads starting off with "Is it just me or..." No it's not just you, but what are you trying to prove?"

It's called discussion. People on the forums like to discuss things.

"No, you assume it's because they don't know as much as you, but you're wrong."

And you seem to assume that we assume that we know more than these people. Well, if someone has problems spelling out the word "you," and must replace it with a "u," a lot of people on this site wonder about them.

"There are a lot of young people who are still in school that post on this website, and their spelling and grammar might not match yours, get over it. "

I'm still in school, and I have no problem with spelling correctly, and using proper grammar.

When someone uses improper grammar, or uses bad spelling, it make that person look ignorant.

"No one. Most people are here to improve their writing skills. Besides, this is a writing site. Why shouldn't there be proper spelling and grammar?"

Why should there be? If you can equally substitute "u" for "you" in your head, is it that big of a deal?

"It's called discussion. People on the forums like to discuss things."

Errm… it's a discussion once it's brought up, before that it's a complaint. The complaint turns into a discussion like we're having now.

"And you seem to assume that we assume that we know more than these people. Well, if someone has problems spelling out the word "you," and must replace it with a "u," a lot of people on this site wonder about them."

Why is there a need to wonder? Obviously they aren't spelling YOU correctly, but they are using it correctly. Some people like to use the "pecking" method of typing. Others like to type fast. Some type careless. Does it really harm you as a reader to see something misspelled? Sure, if someone spelled "problem" as "prblm" then ok, but most people nitpick at trivial spelling errors such as "probelm". Obviously he misspelled it accidentally. Does it NEED to be pointed out? PM the dude and tell him. Take some freaking time out of your "busy" lives to help someone instead of degrade them.

"I'm still in school, and I have no problem with spelling correctly, and using proper grammar."

Good for you, but there are different grade levels in school which dictate different levels of education. So someone in the 7th grade might be posting here (which many do), of course their etiquette won't be up to par with yours.

"When someone uses improper grammar, or uses bad spelling, it MAKE that person look ignorant."

In your opinion it does. I choose to accept that that's how they choose to write. At least they're writing.

lol nice going ann marie (scaredofthedark). i guess people judge others because they think, write and read differently.

you guys seriously need a attitude makeover.
cause to me it shows that even if i dont know you or see you, i see that foolishness and hate oozing from your posts.lol
    anyways see ya

Ismail if they didn't matter much you wouldn't have posted that in another forum....

Writing 'u' instead of 'you' really isn't that big of a deal athough I don't see the TROUBLE with writing out YOU....but people get carried away with this short hand writing. It gets so bad that other people can't even understand it. And I read some where someone writing a sentence in a short hand way and saying that it took them longer to write it "the short way" than to write it correctly. It seems as though it's "cool" to write that way, but it's really more annoying than anything else. As someone said above, this is a writing site so people should use proper grammar, I think. (again my opinion)

When you write poems is the words and meaning that counts

But if people spell the whole thing wrong and it's hard to read, then the poem is ruined

A lot of people do it out of habit. Talking in instant messagers is a quick and easy way of communicating and people use typing like 'dis to make is shorta 4 themselves'. People get into the habit and i do too, i know i do. I at the end of the day i can go back to typing in correct grammar. But when i come home from school and maybe go onto the internet to chat to friends and such like i like to relax, and be informal with them. I don't want to have to think about what i'm typing or how i'm typing it or whether i'm using correct grammar because it is not important, it is not going to be analysed or graded and at the end of the day i see no reason why people who write in their spare time as a hobby should be analysed and have their writing torn apart to every last detail. Sure if this was a site with only professional writers who do this for a living then i could see why you may do that but this is not that sort of site and there is no reason why people who are just trying to post their feelings and work etc. should be torn apart when they havent asked for it. There simply is no need. I see the point that the others of you have made and in some ways i agree but really, it's not that important is it. We all do it sometime, it is human nature to make mistakes.

*phew, glad i got that off my system*

and no i do not need you to correct my typos, bad spelling, bad grammar or incorrect use of punctuation, thank you, if i was that bothered i would use a spell checker.

It is not a "habit," it is pure laziness. I guess some may think that it's cool too. What ever the reason it is stupid. This is a WRITING website, so why would anyone on here want to write like an uneducated dummy? It is not cool, it just makes you look like a damn fool.

Hun whether it's your first language or not, actually particularly because it isn't that's why people give you feedback about your spelling. Would you rather they didn't and people read you work thinking you're and idiot who can't spell?

No, I prefer to be corrected (Thanks JPM and KK who have drilled into my head PLAGIARISM LoL) but I can handle the criticism because they are trying to help in their own ways, help me not themselves improve my writing and quality of writing. If you're not here to improve and simply to get sweet ass comments and votes, firstly you're in the wrong place and secondly why bother writing and posting at all?

    Hmmmmm....

Well, I agree with JustPlainMe, Bob Shank, and anyone else who said that when writing a poem you should be sure that your spelling and grammar are correct and to definitely lay off of the shortened words unless you are doing it on purpose. I mean really, you post your poems on this site so that others can see it and judge it. One would think that you would want to put your best foot forward and show everyone what you can do. Why look like an uneducated person if you don't have to? I'm sure your first grade teacher would be very disappointed if after all of her hard work, you went and spelled the word 'you' wrong. (*Hands on my hips, pointing at you in a reprimanding way*)...

  • Amanda Bee

And why get all bent out of shape when someone corrects you on your spelling and grammar? They are usually only trying to help. If you don't want people criticizing you because of spelling mistakes then don't post spelling mistakes. Or just put it under the 'slang poems' category. Or if you really don't care about what people think about your spelling, then don't complain about them complaining about your spelling...
