This is a pointless post. Its not the generation its the person. And dont bother trying to help if you dont care, cuz you will do more harm than good.

wow, you got paid to do chores? I was always told to do it because it was my obligation. The free room, clothes and food was payment enough. even when we were well off in the 90s.

I don't know if kids have ever "appreciated the simple things in life." You don't start stopping to smell the roses until you realise you may not be around for awhile. Kids are too young to be thinking about that. Kids think they're invincible. Kids don't always think about what their parents taught them. I wouldn't expect more than one kid, or any but a girl, to notice such things. Kids don't have time to notice the little things. Kids have little things to catch. Kids have always just done what's fun and enjoyable to them. That very rarely has ever included parents...though you're right that parents involvement has decreased. I blame divorce rates going up. Parents putting their careers ahead of their children. I'm not saying people shouldn't have careers, it just shouldn't take up your whole life.

I really think THIS GENERATION, if by this generation, I assume you mean those born Generation Y (1982 - 200?), is probably best defined by Columbine.

And I think the reason we start talking about suicide a lot younger, is because it's available to us. Atleast, my generation, I noticed a tendency for us to talk about everything. This generation is into everything. Dark, sad, happy, fun, politically correct or no. the elder generations have given us a million different answers...but Y'all forgot the question. so we have to ask. But we're also obligated to be independant (for this I blame Hippies), so we do our own experiments.

there's also a sense of obliguatory power on our generation, probably because of our size. probably because we're the ones the boomers are expecting to pay their social security. we're not the forgotten, underappreciated Gen X, we have a lot more dedication. In everything we do, for better or for worse, we have alot of dedication. We see things through to the end. Abortions are at an all time low among our generation.

Well, I didn't actually read most of the posts here. But I will state my opinion.

Look at today's world. Look at what the world teaches our children and our families. Women work (not that that is a bad thing at all!), but so do men, often leaving children alone. The last generation did a lot less of that. Cutting wasn't an open idea or discussed in the last generation, therefore I believe that is was just as popular, people just didn't talk about it. It was all hush hush. Also this generation has a lot less religious support. So many teenagers are confused about life, and most choose not to follow a religion to help guide them. I don't have a religion either, and that's why I think that. I believe if I was taught at a young age, say the Catholic religion I would not be near as "suicidal" as I am. Wanting to die sure, but I would never actually think about it. My mother on the other hand would never dream of it. Celebrities and models, they've been around a long time, so I don't blame much on them. But the recent generation is a lot more oriented towards perfection, and skinnyness. So the way this beginning topic was seemingly implying is that teenagers are becoming more "stupid". I think not, I think they are just taught different things, it doesn't make them more stupid. I don't exactly know what it makes them. But I take offence to whoever said that.

If you go to my school u would know. Everyday getting bullshit from "the lads" everyday putting everyone down and stuff. Everyday get worse and worse my life is a living hell. Everything in my life that seems to go right just turns on me and makes it ten times worse. I don't get why I feel like this, or why i do things but I just like it this way. To me being sad and alone is better than being happy and "giggly"!!! And when i tell people Tht i like being unhappy They just look at me strangly and talk about me behind my back. When some people found out that I self harmed It went around the school and instead of them helping. One night on the bus home All the lads from the back of the bus grabbed me and dragged me to the back of the bus pinned me down and lifted up the sleeves of my jumper, to show their mates they were telling the truth. I am so glad that they are stupid and only lifted one sleeve up not both. I went home just crying. I hate the fact tht i lie everyday about how i feel and why i wear a sweatband 24/7 even in bed just incase my mam checks my wrists.
hhhhmmmm....well there is a quick insite into my messed up life. lol. oh well. Mabye that will help you abit i dunno. hhhmmmm.

Yeah but i hardly ever know what i want. Which doesn't help. Being sad is alot eaiser to cope with as the disappointment isn't so harsh. If i am happy i usually find stuff goes wrong and messes up things. Which makes the dissappointment factor even worse. hhhhmmm... : (

I have to agree with Bob on this. Basically we treat our lives like we take our food: like junk. 'quality time' with quality friends or family will do the job of ten councellors put together.

You have to think of it this way: hasn't crime gone up over the years as well?

I think we can all factor drugs, assault, rape, alchohol, and murder into this question. True our generation does seem to be going downhill, and I think crime, though it does not answer the full question, is a big reason.
When it gets to the point where you cannot turn your head for more than 10 minutes from your child in a parking lot without having them snatched, make sure to have a run before dark or with a blunt object in case of an attempted rape, and have numerous talks about the effects of drugs with your kids now that they're dealing them in school, theres going to be emotional drama.

Mass numbers are effected largely because of media. I'm sure you all are aware of this, but back in the fifties news broadcasts wouldn't report much violence unless it was particularly significent. Now that crime rates have sky rocketed, media has us informed of most of what's going on (which the majority of the time is negative) and when a teen turns on the tube to hear about a six year old getting molested in the restroom of a Toy's 'R Us, it could cause emotional damage seeing it day after day.

Not to mention being involved in the listed above. The hormones are a factor too:)

my opinion why this generation seems to rise in numbers considering depression: crime rise (see post above)
