I think that first and foremost the person does have to want to stop. Come on, that has to be a given. On the same thought though, there's a lot more to it than just wanting to stop. For someone who cuts, it does relieve the pain, albeit for just a little while. Cutting is sheltered by isolation and shame. I think that's most of the reason that people use the internet to talk about this. Anyway, you have to have a close support group, someone you can turn to when things get so bad. Someone, or some people, that don't judge you because you do this. The support group and the person her or himself has to realize that it just doesn't happen overnight, there's going to be times when it still happens. Like everything, there's going to be good days and bad days. You might still cut, but that doesn't mean you don't want to get better. It just means you have to pick yourself up and keep going. |

In a perfect world, yes, it would make sense that people would have to get help and all they had to do was really want to stop, but the world doesn't work that way. |

It is sad, but arguing about how things should be doesn't get anyone anywhere. |

Ok, so maybe they are. Who are we to judge that? |
