Would you forgive your father if he was a previous alcoholic who beat your mother and brother, (even when he was sober) gambled all your money away, and called you umimportamt too many times to count? What if he had a mental illness? What if your mother encouraged you to forgive him and give him slack because of his disease?

yes, doesn't mean forget, just forgive, because imagine you were the one with the illness. would you want to be forgiven? what we give is usually what we get in the end...or "what goes around comes around..."

This is only something that you can answer for yourself.

However, what I will say is that people who suffer from Mental Illnesses are not always in control of their actions, both physical and psychological. This can in turn have an effect on their social skills and the ways in which they interact with people around them.

Maybe this man had a troubled up bringing himself? and so is merely copying the behaviour of his Father, which he percieves to be normal.

An easier question to ask is: Would you want to be forgiven? if the situation was reversed. As I said before it is only you who can decide whether to forgive. Look at all the picture, from everyones point of view and your decision maybe made a lot easier.
