ANOTHER Plagiarism Issue

In the forum rules, it says nothing about plagiarism.

As this is a literary site, I find it important to make it generally known WHAT plagiarism is, and that is claiming anothers intellectual property as your own without giving due credit.

Poems are not the only thing that can be plagiarized, as we have found in the "Age Old Philosophical Question" thread in the Members Message Forum. One of our members has taken work from another website and posted it in the discussions as his own responses, without giving the author credit and indirectly claiming it as his own. He says he didnt know it was plagiarism, but who knows if that is the real case. It would seem self explanitory to me that this is wrong, and I believe enough people do it to make issue out of it.

Plagiarism in the boards should NOT be tolerated, just like with poetry. I believe penaltys should be handed out just the same. The person who plagiarised in the other thread has admitted to stealing the work and knows what he did wrong, yet refuses to give due credit to the original author, which I find to be wrong and I want it straightened out, but more importantly I think that this should be used as an example for everyone that this wont be tolerated and that plagiarism is plagiarism, whether it is a work of art or just a work of the mind.

Just because people do it without being caught doesnt make it right. I would like to see a rule added to the forum rules about it and a crack down with penaltys made, because we're cracking down on plagiarism now and following the forum rules more closely.

Surely no one is silly enough to assume that they can copy the work of another, post it here and it will be ok. I mean they might think they can get away with it...and maybe it should be elaborated upon in the rules...mabye flash a subliminal message at everyone when they log on..

    "plagiarism gives you genital warts"

but seriously....we shouldn't need to be stating such things...it's obvious.

You mean you shouldn't put a sign up like that?

    damn....i suck.

The only reason I think it should be added is because it is just as obvious as the other rules.

Plus, the next time it happens I dont want an excuse like "I didnt know THAT was plagiarism..." which is the excuse that was used in the last incident.

    Good idea, Kaitlin...

However, I find it INCREDIBLY hard that someone, on a writing site, does not know what plagiarism is.

Yeah, there are newbies on this site, but this guy is over 18. Most people know what plagiarism is anyway; even if you're NOT a writer.

    It still baffles me.

    ...

You know, "baffles," looks a lot like "waffles." I'm hungry, now...

    Ismail:

You know, you just now revealed yourself as the plagiarizer. I did everything I could to hide your identity, and I figured you would have at least respected that, but I guess you don't care if people know you are a plagiarizer.

As Bret has said, ignorance of a law does not exempt you from it. Even still, it is so unimaginable that you would think that copying someone else's work was not plagiarism. If you didn't know that, you NEVER knew what plagiarism was to begin with.
