I have a stupid question about writing poems

If a poem begins to look too long, is it still a poem? I mean... I don't want to write stories. I just want to write poems. So where, in your opinion, is the line between poem and story? Thanks!

If you see your poem as a poem then it is because 9 times out of 10 you'll be right. If you think its too long to be a poem based on how you feel not other people then it's not and your just a really good story teller.

I don't think a poem can ever be too long. One of the poems I just wrote recently called Broken Up is put into 4 parts and on Microsoft word is 5 pages long, including stanzas with 4 lines. And it's not a stupid question. I really don't think a poem can ever be too long.

length doesn't change a poem into a story, i suppose.

I'm a bit of rebound when it comes to long poems...because personally, no matter who complex my emotions are...i can usually express them with reasonable skill and insight in no more than 5 stanzas...and so any more than that and i get bored reading.

For story type poems the epic approach is fine.

Yes, it is still a poem. Poems can be as long [or as short] as you want them to be.

A poem and a story are not just defined by how long or short they are it is possible to be very long and still be a poem however be carfull about making them to long as the reader will often get bored lose intrest and stop reading half way through.

I still think its a poem. Its just that less patient people might start to lose interest in your writing.

Nomatter how long it is, you write all what you know and what you like.
