More than good friends....

I really like my friend and he knows it, theres even a rumour that he asked me out. We used to be really good friends then when he heard I liked him more than I like anyone else (and that is a LOT of boys!) and he thought it was sweet. It even seemed like he loved me back. Then he went on German Exchange and came back different. Now he seems distant and any conversation we have is short. I just want to be friends with him again, what should I do?
