Help With Poetry Types

I'm need of some help. I've been looking around for such a long time identifying poetry types. However, I stuggle with a few. I have presumed that most of my work is "free verse" or "freestyle" however I'd like someone to check for me, perhaps look at some of my work? Can someone possible explain a ballad? I understand it to be a quatrain stanza rhyming ABAB, but do is this correct AND does there have to be a select amount of syllables to each line?
