when i first read the poem at the start, i was convinced martin was being ironic i mean it sounded so stilted and it basically proved it'self to be wrong by trying to rhyme |

That was mean to say poems have to ryhme because if you force it ryhme it doesn't have that same feeling to it anymore. The person who would read would get a feeling you're like this control freak or something. My poems don't ryhme and there is nothing wrong with them. Writing poems is a way to express your feelings and if you force it all the meaning to it will be lost. Poems don't have to ryhme to be a poem! |

Someone already said this. Freeverse is actually the stuff that doesn't have to rhyme. But that's pretty much under the catagory of poetry now. |

I do get a better meaning from a poem if it actually rhymes because it does look like a story. But I disagree that if it doesnt rhyme, then it's not a poem. You have to be an excellent writer to write a poemt hat doesn't rhyme in my opinion. But then again, I can't do that soooo.... :) |

By definition from the American College Dictionary copyright 1953 on page 935, Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. |

I think as long as the poem has somekind of "beat" to it, it's fair to label it as such. But since poetry is freedom, one cannot technically set rules on what or what is not a poem - the idea of restricting poetry goes against the concept of poetry..thus, anything written to describe emotion, vision or sense is in fact a poem - unless one chooses to label it otherwise. |

hmm.. i can see where your going.. i understand your theory... i too, think poems should rhyme, but ONLY when the poet wants it too.. i for one, like to have my poems rhyming most of the time.. and NO it does'nt have to be everytime... because poetry is about your imagination and how you feel... which doesn't have to rhyme... a poem should make you realize, and inspire you to write more!! lol.. and when it comes down to it, poems that do rhyme do take some time.. because you have to find words tat rhyme with other words which should make sense, and fit into the previous sentences... which sounds hard.. altho sometimes it is.. but when they dont rhyme.. the mood, changes, to seeing a picture in your mind.. as if your walking through that image.. same with rhyming poems, altho non-rhyming gives you the better image... and besides, what should it matter?!?! poetry is poetry. |

Poems can be free versed or rhymed. Personally free verse is better because they are no rules and words are easily found and expressed. |

What I found funny, is that this post thread was done rougly 2 and a half years ago, and we failed to realize that it has been bumped, maybe it's because it is an contreversial issue that has us all in our seat. |

I'd hate to upset you hunni but poems don't have to rhyme. Personally I think that it might give it more of a flow and make a person want to read it more. but...If you are letting out your feelings and your for real instead of making something up then that is all that matters! |

A poem doesn't nessacaraly HAVE to rhyme. it only makes some poems sound better. Did you know that "Jack and Jill" is a poem? It's one of the greatest nursury poems of all time. But yet, it doesn't rhyme. Really, It depends on the TYPE of poem that you're writing. Does that make sense? |

I agree and disagree....some of the greatest poets such as Wilfred Owen (a little favourite of mine) to even modern day poets (Ogden Nash) use rhyme and I think the fact that rhyme is used shows the level of thought and complexity that has gone into a poem. This is not always the case. Also on the other hand free verse...poems that are scrawled down on a napkin in the heat of the moment or are shouted out in the middle of the street...spur of the moment...poetry that hasnt been tied down to a rhyming scheme can be just as good- it depends... |

Rhyming is a skill to do well- especially without compromising content, but it isn't necessary to all poems. I can think of many favourite poems I've read that do not, and they are just as skilled and esteemed, in my opinion. |

Thats a load of rubbish...i personally prefer poems that rhyme but sometimes poems that do not rhyme have the most emotion...and your post is a prime example of how some people that try to rhyme end up talking a load of rubbish because they concentrate so much on the rhyming words they don't worry about the content of the poem. |
