I'm often inspired by music and musical lyrics but in no way would I cut and paste the entire song and claim it as a poem...copy the link and send it on to a mod for removal and punishment - trusty elves :o)

haha how stupid can someone be? they think that not ANYONE on that site knows the song that there stealing? thats just plain stupid if you ask me, i'm sure everyone on this site has there own specific type of music they prefer and maybe a few share the same likeings for a singer/band... so technically they are probably going to be found out if they steal a song.

I guess people have new things to say about it. I mean it is a good topic, anyone who takes things that aren't theirs are really low. If you can't write poems/songs do not take other people's work who can do so. That is just really screwed, okay just don't do it. I run into that too. It is okay to be inspired by a song, maybe use one line and then say you used it at the end of your poem, addmitting that it is not yours, but that is it.

I use other lyrics to get started until recently. When I hear a song with a meaning, I go from there but I would never steal someone elses song.

wow its sad how many people have to steal other peoples poems and/or song lyrics when this site is basically about self expression and poetry.. REAL poetry.. not lies.

For a club challenge, we were asked to take four lines from a country song and write a Glosa. I didn't think of it earlier, but in a way that was plagerizism. Each of the four lines were the ending line of the one of the stanzas. I posted it as mine, because it was a poetry form [style] and the definition is below.

There are a lot of contests that ask us to use another poet's lines or titles. If we just use that one line, is it plagerism?

Then you always have the catch phrases like:
    CUT YOU LIKE A KNIFE
    SCHEME OF THINGS
THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER

In fact, I wrote a complete poem using very common phrases. Is that considered plagerism?

Where do you draw the line? I'm not condoning the right to copy someone elses work, but we read poetry every day that has the same line or two of one we read before.

I think plagerism should be reported, I have done so, myself, but am I guilty of the same thing?

My poem: "Billy's Got is Beer Goggles on" is the glosa I wrote using lines from a country song. The title is the same as the song, but outside of the line ending each of the four stanzas, everything else is mine.
    **(Glosa)

A Spanish form invented by court poets in the 14th and 15th centuries. An opening quatrain, called a 'cabeza' is chosen from another poet. The glosa elaborates or 'glosses' on the quatrain with four ten line stanzas, their concluding lines taken consecutively from the quatrain and their sixth and ninth lines rhyming with the borrowed tenth

My poem: "Word Rage" is the one filled with catch or common phrases.

Personally, I enjoyed writing each of them, but now I have to ask myself if I should have posted them.

If you enter a contest where you have to choose a line from a list, can you still post that poem. Even if the line wasn't from a song, the person who started the contest created those lines before listing them.

I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just curious.

    Feedback please

i have seen various poems written by friends or just people who i have met, and most of the verses have mainly been inspired by songs which to me, ok it classes as poetry and makes them a kinda poet, but if there is over excess of it then i just think its rather sad and cant really be classed as a poem they have made because it has just been ripped off from a song.
dont get me wrong its not a crime to use lyrics from other songs and get ur inspiration from it but copying it is just wrong!

i recently saw someone write a terrible rip off to I write sins not tragedies by panic at the disco and i was disgusted. i mean, ripping lyrics off of bands is not called writing your own music. it's stupid.
