Yep, i've been thinking about that for the longest time...just today i went down the list of my poems and i was both disgusted and impressed with myself. Disgusted at how elementary my first poems seemed, but impressed with how much i've improved. Lately, i've been practicing different forms of poetry and they've really excersized (sp?) my ability and skills to write poetry. |

Yea, I feel that way a lot. I remember when I first started writing, I always thought what I wrote was really good. But when I look back, I think they really weren't that good as to what I thought they were. So you aren't alone. And I know there's probably quite a few people who share that same problem. |

Oh, you are definitely not alone, I have deleted a lot of mine, and of course I saved them. I figure someday, I might want to go back and edit them. A writer, no matter how long you have been writing, will always have room to grow. Don’t let it get you down, saving poems and looking back on them, can give you confidence, it allows you see just how far you have come. I have so many that I look at and say “what was I thinking†but I see so many things I would have done differently. Use them as learning tool it can really be helpful. |

I thought I was the only one who had that problem. I feel that way about many of my poems as well. |

yea i feel that way all the time but its really because as you write more you improve as a writer so the way you look at a piece of writing develops and you find what you wrote before not as good because at your current status you can do better. its all part of growing as a writer lol |

Happens all the time, after writing I go back and look at them and say "Boy, this really stinks" but never mind. Writing is a release for me to lose some of the pressure that is built up within. |

Yeah, some of my earlier poems are quite embarassing, but as you all say, look back and see the improvements and growth you've made, feel proud! |

Its all about improvement! You realise your faults after you've written a poem, but at the same time, just after you written it, you feel pride because this is an improvement on your last poem, and so you're last poem then doesn't seem very good. |

I'm the same as JHarrison. When I write a poem, I usually dislike it, then I look back on it and think, "hey, that's not that bad..." |

It looks like there are loads of people who think just the same way you do - and that includes me. I never really thought I had any kind of ability to write poetry until a certain person entered my life and, hey, all of a sudden poetry started spouting out of me. But, like you, I look back at them and think "What a load of rubbish". I have to say, though, that it depends on the sentiment. If it was written straight from the heart (which most of mine are) then the memory of the event usually causes me appreciate the poem even though it might not win a litterary prize, and I realise that someone else might not find it so good because they have not had my personal experience. There are rare occasions when I will look back on a poem I have written and think to myself "wow, that was good, did I write that??" but that doesn't happen very often. Don't know if I'm making any sense. |

I don't think any of my poetry is any good when I write them. But that doesn't stop me from writing or putting them in view of the public. because when I write, I write from the heart and I don't care about structure or form or anything that makes good poetry. I don't write to be good. I write because not writing is like not breathing. and breathing is a common thing, so I don't really expect anything for it. When I get something for it though, it's the best feeling in the world. I am eternally grateful & I pay it back threefold. |

Indeed, I do not think my poetry is very good, but I simply write to satisfy my desirous soul. As all of you say, writing is very gratifying, and I love getting feedback, and commentaries, so that I can improve, or if all the feedback is positive, then I feel I may have accomplished something in my life. |

I Feel That Way All Of The Time! I Look At My Old Poems From The Past, And I Think To Myself "What The He** Was I Thinking?!",....But Then Again What Seems Bad To You May Be Beautiful In Others Eyes *Shrugs* xoxo-Nikki-xoxo |

My opinion on my poetry usually depends on the reason for which I write it. If I am writing on emotion, without much thought and meditation, then I usually dislike it later on. However, if I have thought about my strategy and the psychology behind my poem before (or as) I write, then I generally am much more impressed with the outcome. |

Not everything one writes will be brilliant, poetic genius, but the ability to recongnize the less than perfect pieces is what separates those who show true talent and marked improvement in their abilities and those who don't!!! To be a great artist, no matter what your art (craft) be, is to have centian standards of quality for your work, your art. It is to ever work to meet and surpass said standard!!! Look to ever improve on whatever shortcomings you may have, as far as your poetry is concerned and focus on getting better, improving, and not that fact that you have a few shortcomings!!! |
