How do you pick titles?

What do you do if you write a poem but you don't know what the title should be?, I don't know what other people do but it kinda annoys me to put "can't think of a title" so I usually just make up a stupid one,

well read it a few times and think of really good combos of the lamest words, that's kinda what i do, lol, or put the main theme of the poem, or half a really cute line in a poem you right or something

I think about the one emotion that i felt the most when i wrote the poem. Then i begin to think of all the words i know associated with it. Then you have a wealth of titles.

i always sum it all up. like use a word or more that sums up the whole poem and what its about. if i cont think of any i turn to my club and they help me out;)

Some of the greatest poets never use titles. Titles should only be used, I think, if you are sure about it and of the appropriacy. If you really struggle, just don't bother. I hope this helps.

I usually pick my favorite line, and then choose the words. For example:

This was my favorite line of the poem:
You're my cruel angel of the night

    The title: My Cruel Angel

Sometimes, I first think of a title that sounds good, and then I make the poem.

Mostly I think of a very cool title, and then write a poem to suit it, probably why most of my poetry isn't very good!

My titles usually come out of the poem. Most of the time, I know what I'm writing about or what my title is before I write my poem. If it's a poem to, about, a specific person (girl usually) it's their name. Usually what I'm trying to say in the poem is the title. Your poem usually tells you what its title should be. Just read it over and see what it is you wrote and what it saids to you and saids to the reader and that there makes up your title!!!

i usually get my titles from a line in the poem that really summarises the poem for me or a line that i feel would work well or if the poem uses repetition i try to use that. I'd suggest if you're stuck maybe trying to think how the poem makes you feel and creating a title from that or put untitled!

    hope that helps..

take the subject of your last stanzas and whatever stands out more should be your title

Sometimes when I'm really lost for a title I use a quote or a piece of a quote that pertains.

i usually take a line outta my poem that is a description of it. Or i use a line in it that i have repeated, or the starting or ending line.

  • shadowlight

usually i read the poem back and then use either a repeated phrase or the common theme, very rarely i start with a title in mind and write from that...but writing first is easier.

  • The Invisible Boy

I do pretty much the same thing as shadowlight, but I usually think up a name first to base the poem around, then write it then see if the poem fits with the title, but if it doesn't fit with it I read through and see the message of my poem and make that the title.

Wow Thats An Awesome Question...I Would Have To Say That I Just Think Of Something Unique, Something I Know I Want See Alot Of People Using, I Just Think Creative....But Lately I've Just Been Writing My Poetry, Then I Go Back And Look Through My Poem And Find Two Words That Define The Poem Overall xoxo-Nikki-xoxo

for me the title doesnt have to be mentioned in the poem iteself
though it has to describe or reflect on what the poems about
    e.g
A poem i wrote called kisses on your fingertips
...this line isnt in the poem
but its a poem about someone i was madly in love with and while they were asleep i held there hand kissing their fingertips.
    Has to have meaning
    the title is key

My titles tend to sum up the poems meaning. However if there are too many contradicting meanings to te poem I just pick some important part of the poem as the title.
Or of course I may do both...

i tend to use maybe the first or last sentance in the poem it sorta suits in better that way

    I'm a lazy title-maker...actually, I'm just plain lazy...
usually start with a title. usually ends up being the first line of the poem.

other times i just rip one from some usually unrelated song.

Other times, a title comes to me only after I hear it irl, out-of-context, when I'm not even thinking about writing. The main theme will be discussed, or something reminds me of the main theme (I have a habit of connecting seemingly unrelated things). It'll just be thrown out there and I'll grab it.

jus my way of doing it...

I read the poem and think of what it's about. Sometimes I'll pick a line in the poem that really sums it up, or I will change it abit. Titles normally just come to my head, like most of the poem... But if the poem isn't very good, I'll have a really crappy title. Not on purpose, but that's just what comes. I dunno, it's weird lol.

It's really hard for me to come up with a title too.
I usually just try to put my poem to life, and describe it in a few words.

Title picking: Takes creativity or you can just make it a simple one word title.

well i'll tell ya wat i do... I can never write a poem by putting a title first and if i did then as u can see i dont do it often cause i cant remember one poem dat i did this too..So wat i do is i re-read my poem and look for the meaning in it, and once i find it den i think of a title. For xample if ur writing about about lost and grief u could easily put "lost and grief" as ur title or u can read ur poem and the word(s) dat seem to appear more in ur poem can be ur title, or another way i use is the way u end ur poem...Just go and look up some of my poems on this site...i've got them everywhere or just look up someone elses poems and try and see how the title makes sense with the poem. Hoped dis helped ya...sincerly April Chapleau
