Philosophical/"Thinking" Movies

Well, in my opinion these are a bit philosophical:

    Fight Club
    SAW

Fight Club: too difficult to describe without giving it away... losta action.
    SAW: A thriller.

Actually, it is extremely clever. I thought so too, but it's very well done, you've got to check it out, it isn't just a thriller.

Basically it's a "puzzle", so really, it does make you think. The above link is the plot outline.

Saw was awesome and like i'd think about how i'd get out and handle the situations and that. I loved it.

I saw gothika... I don't really think it was philosophical. I wouldn't catagorise it as a philosophical type of movie.
Umm... is the butterfly effect one? That's what I've heard, haven't exactly seen it though.

I reackon gothika is, love that movie.
Yeah butterfly effect is one, directors cut version is the best coz you get more of an effect from it, it left me stunned after i finished watching it.

    My Dinner With André

One of the most unusual and most intriguing films I've watched. Two guys have dinner and share a conversation that gets deep into the intricacies of their lives.

...and Requiem for a Dream, mentioned above, was a great addition here. A depressing film but definitely one to stimulate a lot of thinking.

"Saw" is still number one on my favourite movie list. There's an actual really good storyline behind it.

these are phicological thrillers but they really make you think:
The Silence of the Lambs (not hannibal or red dragon-those stink)- I dont need to explain
Saw- two men in a really difficult situation, a puzzle^like said above
Phone Booth-Man stuck in a phone booth, by orders of a snyper, has to make tough choices, or people die
The Shining- Someone who goes crazy while isolated in a house with family
The Panic Room- mother and daughter held hostage
Don't Say A Word- kinda complicated, good though
One Hour Photo- A man who developes photos, becomes obsessed with a family. Not really a thriller
    Gothica- Phycologist goes insane, twisty.

lorraine none of those are phycological movies and they all suck theres no thinking involved in any except saw and thats already been stated i mean phone booth theres no thought involved same with panic room how is being in a panic room while people try to get into the room physcological?

  • Vegetable

You must have missed the main Idea of those movies, Because the whole aspect of fear, dread, and panic (hint:panic room) is phycological.
compare one of those movies to the average horror or mistery, and thats where you can clearly see the physcological aspects.

Although it might seem a little off, I'd certainly say (my fave. movie EVER) 'Life As A House' makes one think when you're done. its a really touching movie:

'Life As A House' (2001) - Story about a troubled teen whose father, whom he much dislikes,is dying of cancer. his father, being an architect, asks his son to build a house with him, if its the last thing he does. It basically really makes you think about life and what one should really do with it.

Thirteen is a good one too
It's an indie film about the ways teens can get themselves into trouble. It's really good

Beautiful, Nada. I can't believe I forgot A Beautiful Mind. Such a great movie. Though, the real man himself didn't see things, he heard voices.

Pay It Forward is an excellent movie, also. Makes you think "How can I change things?"

Oh, i just thought of another one. Thanks to the Cronenberg refference.

"eXistenZ" The movie went unnoticed due to its somewhat similarity to "The Matrix". Its a complicated movie about a game that connects to oneself, the game bracnhes out within itself and confuses the player. If you watch it from start to finish it REALLY sets you off thinking.

I Am Sam, Braveheart. Les Choristes...

All movies make you think in some way, but these three are my favorites. They are all very artful, talented films, with very good acting and a great story behind them, especially as Braveheart is a true story...

Fight Club (but it was also disgusting)
Bruce Almighty (what would you do if you were God for a day?)
The Count of Monte Cristo (about love, and betrayal, and revenge...)

i was just about to suggest 'Donnie Darko' cause I saw it for the first time yesterday, and again today, and I was just blown away. I shouldn't have been surprised to already see it up there!
