Bob, I'm not aware of the situation, but having been to two executions, one of which I did the escort, I have some definitive thoughts about the death penalty. It is an act of finality, and constitutes legal revenge and murder. Is killing someone, for killing another person justified? If we, as citizens operated with the "eye for an eye" motive, we would find ourselves criminals and facing the same fate. State sanctioned murder isn't any better. The flip side is, can you guarantee that the person will never get out and do it again? The executions I saw, both parties should never be allowed out. The second one escaped from prison and killed the victim of his original crime. Did he deserve to die? Probably. Would his execution have been necessary if his confinement had been permanent and successful? For the victims family, is opening old wounds, eleven or twelve years later beneficial....the trial gave them closure and now the old wounds are opened. So many things to consider....this is one arguement that will not be resolved in my life. There are so many other variables....has the person changed? Is it legitimate? I am not the same person now, that I was eleven years ago. Few people are. |
