I will soon recieve information concerning publishing a book, which I assume will be very similar to publishing a collection of poems (probably exactly the same), when I get the info, I'll definitely share it with you all!

what do you mean? like personally or otherwise?

  • Sean Allen

that would depend on what u mean by publishing... Aken Sol and I want to publish a collection... some people are talking about publishing individual poems in a poetry book made by a company, in which case I think they will pay you a bit yeh.

Please none of you be fooled by www.poetry.com, you post a poem, everyone gets a letter through the post to say you are a finalist. Then if you give them permission they publish your poem, not only do you get no money but you have to pay alot of money to buy the book. It is a total rip off!

It cost a lot of money to get yourself published, according to a friend of mine..but it may be the only way to get truly recognised.

for publishing..does anyone have any good sites for poems that I could also submit my poetry to?

  • Aken Sol

I'm sorry to say, but there aren't any good sites that publish your poetry works. If you wan't it published, you should go talk to an authorized publishing company. We still havn't gotten the packet about the publishing info yet but when we do, Sean Allen and i will share it with ou all.

as I said in another thread, poetry.com DOES infact publish your poem in a book... they don't pay you or charge you to put it in the book... but yes, you do have to pay for the book...and your poem can only be 20 lines. I have had 4 of mine published in their books (only bought one book...but nothing else)... I recently have had two published internationally as well...same deal, no pay no charge unless you want to buy the book... but the thing is... it gets your work out there.... just a few days ago, I was informed that I was selected to be in Who's Who of American Poets... again, no pay, no charge, unless I want the book...but this time, I have a whole page for my poem, and a whole biographical page. It's not a TOTAL rip-off... I'm sure publishers read through these.... if not, hey... no skin off my back....

Ivy House Publishing quoted me a price of $13-18,000 as a BARE BONE MINIMUM for publishing, warehousing, adversting etc....

on lulu.com, you can publish stuff but there is no advertising.... you'd have to send people there to see what you have... (my stuff is there at www.lulu.com/justalamb2)

Yes, Karen, it is. But you have to send them there to look... lulu does no advertising for you.

I have recieved information concerning the publishing of your own work. It DOES require money, but the price includes advertising and whatnot. I recieved this information from a buisness that publishes for aspiring authors/writers. Go to www.authorhouse.com , that is the company I am considering using.

i have to get my license, fix my car, pay for insurance... and i have to buy my clothes and pay for my school stuff...
there's no way i can afford to pay for my poetry to be published right now... although itd be nice...
i need someone who will do it for free... or close to it....

Well, I mean it all depends on what kind of publishing you mean. Aken Sol and I are talking about publishing a book; a collection of many poems. If you just want a couple of poems published, well I am sure there are poem anthologies that will publish your poem for very little money.

FOR THOSE POETS INTERESTED IN GETTING PUBLISHED:

I have had most of my poems published in various literary magazines about ten years ago, also had four chapbooks published by the small presses and for five years was editor/publisher of my own small press literary zine. While it's true there are a lot of scam sites/publishers, the best way to get published is by submitting your work to the small press literary magazines (paper printed) or to the numerous poetry e-zines on the internet. These 'zines accept or reject your work according to the merit of the work itself (and of course the needs and tastes of the zine and it's editors). There is also the option of self-publishing (this would be for a collection of poems in book form, not just a couple poems).
For more detailed listings of e-zines and publishers, information on how to submit work and other related topics there is a lot of information under the topics Notes On Writing Poetry at http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/discussion/topic.html?topic_id=56674 (there is a detailed posting though you may have to hunt through the other postings to find it) and under Notes On Writing Poetry (Part II) at http://www.poems-and-quotes.com/discussion/topic.html?topic_id=86274. As for getting individual poems published in the poetry paper-publications and poetry on line e-zines, there are hundreds of sites with zine listings and related information and as mentioned there are a bunch listed under the Notes On Writing Poetry topic (even though it is locked it can still be accessed). I've included a few of these sites listed below to get you started.

I know some members have mentioned having had books of poetry published and as I would like to get a collection of my poems published in book form, I would be interested in hearing from any of those members on where and how to go about getting this done and about the details of their books being published (like if they paid for it or the publisher did, if it is available through any major websites (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc., if any advertising was done on behalf of the book, how to contact the publisher (website address or regular mail address), and other information. I would really appreciate if anyone could give me any information on that.

Below are some website addresses for listings of poetry markets, poetry e-zines and other poetry related sites.

Thanks.
