Relationships with parents.

Is it .. "normal" to have such a distanced relationship from your parents. Most girls sit down and have talks with their mum, I cant. Last time I cuddled my mum was when my dog died about 5 years ago, and even then I felt awkward. She knows nothing about me, I never cry in front of them. I can't remember the last time I cuddled my dad. I feel awkward talking to my mum about personal things, and I never go out with her on my own. And I've never told them I love them, or vice versa. Why do I feel so awkward around them? Nothing ever happened to make me feel this way. I've never been abused by them or anything like that so it confuses me why im not close to them at all.

It probably depends a lot on the influence your parents had in their own youth. Do they seem to have the same kind of relationship with their own parents?

Families differ and it's hard to say what's normal. My parents tend to be more intrusive and even overbearing at times. But I know they mean well and we are all pretty close.

You didn't say whether you would want to establish a closer relationship with your parents. But if you did, there may be ways to get them to warm up.

There also very intrusive though and try to talk but I can't.

Well my grandad died when my dad was 12, and my mum's mum hated her and her dad wasn't much better either so I don't suppose they had very good childhoods.

I don't know if I do want a closer relationship with them, I feel very awkward round them.

That must suck, I havn't had to deal with that so don't know how it must feel.
