I agree with that emo rhyme, but I really don't care about labels. They keep you away from your friends. It's like racism except a little different, because people can't ban it. It's separating people from others and locking them in their own box.

Lol this is a great post, but from my point of view emo is just a pathetic lable because people fail to be unique so they say they are because they are emo. Same as goth, yet we often lable them to, my friend recentally went to a small town and had braclits (jelly o's) on and DC's and they asked her if she was punk. Some of my pother friends get labled "goth" because they wear black zip ups, and i my self have been asked if i were goth, because i wre a black hoodie...emo is just a lable that people use to try to fit in some where, and in doing that get hammered on. but we let in on their self proclaimed emo and goth lables by doing this right here. well thats all ive got to say.

Kay, lot's of misrepresentations here.

EMO is a music style derived from the punk scene. like punk, it is guitar-oriented and usually analog recording. lyrics are deep and meaningful. unlike punk, EMO lyrics tend toward the 'emotional' or personal problems of the artist, rather than the global problems of totalitarian governments and poverty and controversial issues and the like.

technically, any music can be 'emotional' but EMO music is about the sound of the recording.

EMO kids are just fans, they listen to the music and go the shows, they're usually ADD-rattled, anorexic thin, spoiled rich kids who identify with the self-centered shyness of the lyrics. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes they are pretty cool. Scene kids are frakkin annoying preps though. Stuck-up attitudes abound.

the stuck-uppity-ness I refer to is best shown by a conversation I overheard some art students having. they are the type to define themselves as scene emo kids. they like the more wussy emo type bands. elliot smith, bright eyes, death cab for cutie, dashboard confessional (i don't consider dc emo, too many power chords, but many scene kids would have them included), you know the music emo kids listen to when making love (or dry-humping, emo kids are often afraid of sex, or sexually retarded, I include myself in that generalisation as well). anyway, this is the convo:

"Don't you just hate those fat art students."
"They're so angry."
"And everyone knows why."
((say more in whispered tones, looking self-consciously around))

I'm not an art student, and I've lost my high school pounds, but I've been almost 200lbs before and I was so close to saying, "Well not everyone can pull off the anorexic thin look." but they were a good distance away, and it wasn't something I could just shout at them, plus I don't really know them that well. and in like 2 miliseconds they changed topics anyway, so, their little misplaced anger management was probably forgotton.

but, no, i don't consider them emo at all. just posers. preps with no taste in music.

i LOVE how this forum turned into a big issue...when really it's not. everyone here has different opiuons on what emo means, and we all have to deal with that. they way i see it ( and this is MY opiuon) "emo" is just another stupid word we use to identify people..or put certine people into a group (ex: prep, punk,goth, jock,etc) when in reality we're all just people.

bree, emo didn't start in the sixties. the term wasn't being used until about 1986, starting in the alternative music scene of Washington D.C.

to the OP^^^, I can see how someone outside the country doesn't know about it...

and to all the complainers about labeling: whatever, everything has a label. without labels, things get confusing. Besides, stereotyping is fun.

Technically what most of you are on about are "emo posers" or the sterioutypical (dunno how to spell) view of what an "emo" is.... the people who are thinking "ooo wow i wann abe emo yay im sooo cooool cos im emo"

But what i dont think alot peoples get is that emo isnt a person its a style of music... EMOtional Hardcore... and so peoples who like these bands and style of music are given the name "emo"

But i think its pathetic.. all my fave bands are soo called "emo"bands and technically that makes me an emo... but im not the whole.. "oo lets sit in a corner and cry" person.. i just like the music... and the dress style and all that shizz.

America isnt the only place with 'emos'. emo is just a stereotype for an emotional person. this is sometimes judged by the way they dress, their hairstyle etc. You could find an emo person anywhere.

I hate labels, people constantly change what I am. Sometimes they call me a chav/scally because I listen to Eminem, 50 Cent, 2Pac etc. and other rap and I wear a tracksuit. Other times they call me a goth because I wear a lot of black, like a hoodie, jeans and stuff and I listen to heavy metal like Evanescence. Other times they call me an emo, I think it's because I listen to Bullet For My Valentine and sometimes I'm lucky and I'm not called anything. But my brother calls me a student, that has to be the funniest of them all because he thinks it's an insult but it isn't that bad seeing as though I do go to college and I am a student lol.

Every place has people who think they got it worst then they do... Every place also have people who do have it bad.

It's sort of funny because you said you could find emo every where. My little town (technically tiny city) doesn't seem to have any-possibly one. I've only seen like one or two gothic people (and that's only going by one look so, could be none). We do have a good bit of punk though.

I just relised I might be over looking the new kid. We just got a new kid, he aint that pritty and he seems to have low self asteem. Some one would ask him a questoin and he'd ignore them like they're teasing him. I've heard whispers of "He cuts his wrist, now I'm afraid to talk to him." but wrist cutting doesn't exactly mean Emo, and I can't be tottaly sure he's the one their talking about. I can't remember how he dresses, and I know nothing of his prefenses in music.

In my opinoin Emo doesn't mean that your whiny, just means your emotoinal and is often asocaited with a tyle, and very closly tied to Emo music. Sounds to me like an Emo is more likly to express his/her feelings through their apearance, self injury, or anger. Like I said before I've never had the chance to really deal with anyone gothic/emo in person, so go ahead and tear this apart 'cuz of that.

Ok im a goth (Go figure) and most of you got it right, emo means emotional, it can also mean goth wanna-be.
But you must remember goths arent some "Doom and Gloom" society people make us out to be, we are just like you with our own music, art and fashion sence. There is nothng wrong with being emo (except for the goth wanna-be).
