I too, do not celebrate Christmas. When someone says happy holidays then I promptly respond with a big smile and a thank you because I just think how nice of them and it seems very general. But if they wish me a merry Christmas I do usually say, 'Well, I don't celebrate Christmas, but thank you anyway', just to let them know and because it just seems so much more specific. Hmmm, I never really thought of myself as self-involved or ignorant. In fact I didn't realize it even bothered anyone. It is just kind of an automatic response, you know. Like if someone offered me spinach (which I don't like) or pork (which I don't eat), I would automatically say, oh no I don't eat that, but thank you anyway. Well, at least I'm always polite:)

Some people can just be so cold sometimes! It would not hurt to return the courtesy with a hello and thank you and how are you? This reminds me of the Charles Dickens tale of that terrible old man Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol."

That woman would do well to have a visit from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future!

I must agree. My brother, he's 12, was in Target and he said Merry Christmas to some older man. And the guy was like "I don't celebrate Christmas and I don't like Christmas either." My brother was kinda freaked out and mumbled a quick apology. But I mean the kid is only 12 and the guy like snapped at him. What's wrong with just being polite and saying thanks?

Also she was saying have nice holidays - That doesn't mean she was saying have nice christmas holidays - That's pretty stupid it should just be a thankyou and move on.

she should have been more polite, people need to be more polite in many other cases as well. but to do that to a kid, poor thing. I’ve never ran into that case, or that responds to tell you the truth until this year, it really took me off guard.

At the end of the day does it really matter?

Miserable old coots who have nothing better to do than rain on other people's parade tend to get more wet than anyone else.

We are made of stronger stuff, we can accept and not be offended by someone who isn't of the same ilk. If someone said Happy Hanukkah to me I'd probably buy 'em a beer as an excuse to celebrate. So focus on what you have and what you believe over Christmas, be that a star and a birth or the ritual sacrifice of a goat facing west whilst wearing nothing but a pair of briefs and galoshes as you sing Alvin Stardust oldies to octagenarian hippos...

    Merry Christmas!

That's so rude! I don't think I'll be wishing any of my customers a Merry Xmas from now on, I'll probably blow up or something if they replied back to me like that!

Maybe she isn't happy about the fact that she doesn't celebrate Christmas...still, kinda impolite.

Happy holidays doesn't go towards Christmas. If you were talking about Christmas you would say Christmas. Happy holidays can be used for any religion and same for Seasons Greetings.
