Disrespectful Poets

They could be jealous or ignorant. People's opinions do vary about stuff, and no matter what you do, someone is going to say you suck, so I guess you need to focus on the opinions you trust and value.

Watch out for the "trolls" out there...their main goal is to annoy...here's a description I found from another site...

    What is a Troll?
An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing discord on the Internet. He/she tries to
    start arguments and upset people.

Trolls are utterly impervious to criticism (constructive or otherwise). You cannot negotiate with them, you cannot cause them to feel shame or compassion, you cannot reason with them. They cannot be made to feel remorse. For some
reason, trolls do not feel they are bound by the rules of courtesy or social responsibility.

Perhaps this sounds inconceivable. You may think, "Surely there is something I can write that will change them." But a true troll can not be changed by mere words.

    Why Does it Matter?
Some people — particularly those who have been online for years — are not upset by trolls and consider them an inevitable hazard of using the net. As the saying goes, "You can't have a picnic without ants."

Another problem is that the negative emotions stirred up by trolls leak over into other discussions. Normally affable
people can become bitter after reading an angry interchange between a troll and his victims, and this can poison previously friendly interactions between long-time users.

Finally, trolls create a paranoid environment, such that a casual criticism by a new arrival can elicit a ferocious and inappropriate backlash.

What Can be Done about Trolls?
When you suspect that somebody is a troll, you might try responding with a polite, mild message to see if it's just somebody in a bad mood. Internet users sometimes let their passions get away from them when seated safely behind their keyboard. If you ignore their bluster and respond in a pleasant manner, they usually calm down.

However, if the person persists in being beastly, and seems to enjoy being unpleasant, the only effective position is summed up as follows:

The only way to deal with trolls is to limit your reaction to reminding others not to respond to trolls. When you try to reason with a troll, he wins. When you insult a troll, he wins. When you scream at a troll, he wins. The only thing that trolls can't handle is being ignored.

    What Not to Do
As already stated, it is futile to try to "cure" a troll of his obsession. But perhaps you simply cannot bear the hostile environment that the troll is creating and want to go away for a while.

If you do that, then for the sake of the others on the system, please do not post a dramatic "Goodbye!" message. This convinces the troll that he is winning the battle. There is, perhaps, no message you can write on a message
system that is as damaging as an announcement that you are leaving because of the hostility that the troll has kindled.

If you feel you must say something, a discreet message to the system admins is the best course of action.

    The Admins Challenge
When trolls are ignored they step up their attacks, desperately seeking the attention they crave. Their messages become more and more foul, and they post ever more of them. Alternatively, they may protest that their right to free speech is being curtailed.
The moderator of a message board may not be able to delete a troll's messages right away, but their job is made much harder if they also have to read numerous replies to trolls. They are also forced to decide whether or not to delete posts from well-meaning folks which have the unintended effect of encouraging the troll.
Some webmasters have to endure conscientious users telling them that they are "acting like dictators" and should never delete a single message. These people may be misinformed:
they may have arrived at their opinion about a troll based on the messages they see, never realizing that the webmaster has already deleted his most horrific material.

When a troll attacks a message board, he generally posts a lot of messages. Even if his messages are not particularly inflammatory, they can be so numerous that they drown out the regular conversations (this is known as 'flooding'). Needless to say, no one person's opinions can be allowed to monopolize a chat or forum.

    Conclusion
Trolls crave attention, and they care not whether it is positive or negative. They see the Internet as a mirror into which they can gaze in narcissistic rapture.

So any time your presented with a possible Troll, just know that not responding to them is just the best course of action. Eventually they will stop and move on to something else.

I think it depends on the context. If I got a poor comment, I wouldn't mind if it was also truthful. In fact I'd encourage it. If my poems suck and no one tells me, how am I ever going to get better?

To be honest who cares what they think, im sure you dont write poetry in order to satisfy other people, it should be so you can achieve a sense of accomplishment, and your poems are very good, so its is probabally because theirs are shit and full of no depth and thought, whereas yours are!

"Why are some people saying some good poems suck?"

Because we all have different opinions? Mind you, I do like the added description of trolls. I've done a bit of trolling in my time, largely on extremist right-wing websites. It can be incredibly good fun.

Back to the topic though, I think sometimes people take the voting here waaaay too seriously. My stuff seems to hover around 4.0 to 4.5 and I find that incredibly flattering. At the same time I have seen kids with sort of 4.8 rated poems bitching about people "deliberately" downgrading them. And when I've gone to look at their poems I see why they got downgraded...

The same reason some of mine do: someone didn't like it. And you know what? It's not a big deal.

Oh, I've gotten that alot on my other account because of my opinions. Along with downvotes

  • Natalie

Noni: Downvoters suck! ..All those poems of yours that got downvoted that time were actually really good. But.. lately I've noticed. Actual formed types of poetry get downvoted alot. Like, Triolets, Haiku's, Sedoka's, Nonets. The type of poems that take abit to do and are a little harder to write get less credit? I don't understand that.

  • BrokenMisery

Simply ignore people who tell you your stuff sucks, UNLESS they sit down and tell you why and see if you can perhaps learn from the critique.

  • Drew Gold

How you receive criticism is just as important as how it's given to you. So, like the above post -- take it for what it is, and try to learn from whatever it is, no matter the vibe you get.

Has anyone given thought to the posibility that the poem could, in fact, be bad? Opinions are opinions, but I just because someone does not agree with an opinion, does not make that opinion wrong.

    Your poem is bad.

Surely, I would argue against this opinion, because I love what I write and hold value to it. But if the poem I love so dearly is a bad poem, then the person who stated the opinion is in the right, so to speak. It is easy to hold a negative remark lower than a positive one, but if the negative one is correct, then why is it so hard to accept it?

No one wants to admit that they are bad at what they love to do- that is why.

Opinions are opinions, but I just because someone does not agree with an opinion, does not make that opinion wrong.

some people dont see things or express themselves the same way others do. We all come from different backgrounds. Im not blaming the ones who's hatin off good poems. You never know what they went through. I view it as another way of expressing themselves. I wouldnt take it personal cuz honestly i write disrespectful poems. It all matters how i feel at that particular time.

Well Top Sloth, in my opinion, if the poem is really bad, I wouldn't say it sucks, I would rather say Good start and then give them a list of things they could do.

This thread refers to those who say those things without reason or helping improvement.

  • Aline

it is true, ppl do have different opinions but to show ur opinion u shoud show it in a respectful way. everyone has his own type of writing and no one has to do with it, everyone could give his point of view but he disrespects himself before disrespecting others with his opnion... i don't think that anyone here could disagree hearing comments and opinion, bt he would get mad when it seems that it is disrespecting...

  • amandaa

Maybe it's not a good poem. Maybe it is. I think that in some cases, it's just stupid people, being stupid. But also, maybe the poem does suck.
But even if it's not a good poem...I don't exactly agree with saying "your poem sucks."..it doesn't exactly help improvement...

I don't think anyone can rate emotion. We, as poets, use those very emotions to build our masterpieces. If you go to an art museum and look at the work of some of the most famous artist, we may be inclined to say their work sucks, yet they are famous. I believe, it might be that we don't understand it. Same holds true to poets and their works of art. It might be that we just don't get it.

  • HumanAngel

Nobody has any right to be disrespectful to another poet or their forms of writing. Everyone is different and that is what makes them unique. There are other 'poets' who feel they are better than someone else, all I can say to them is that a REAL poet would admire and take note of other peoples work and apprieciate it.

Yeh ignorance... I think when they are disrespectful they aren't taking in what you are trying to say, blinded by sense... when reading a poem you need to think out of the box and people who don't are the ones who leave bad comments or votes... luv from broken_reflection xoxoxoxo
