I used to be that way. It always came natural to rhyme, but I've gotten away from that. Now I struggle a bit more with rhyming. |

I think it is harder to not rhme, I find it easy to put words into simalur words. I find that not rhymeing can be harder. You don't t try to find words that rhyme but go together. I think thats the hardest part |

I find it much easier not to rhyme, or follow the a-b-a-b structure. I find that the vast majority of rhyming poems I read are far to cliched to mean anything - or the rhyme couplet has just been over used. I also think when writing that needing to rhyme really limits the words I can use, for obvious reasons! I do rhyme sometimes but only if I think the rhyme is not over used. |

It is hard to make a none rhyming poem flow perfectly. With rhyming it gives the illusion of a perfect flow, unless it really is perfect. |

i dont know. good quality non-rhyming could be harder than good quality rhyming depending on the person. |

I find it easy to Ryhme, but there are times when it is just as easy not to Ryhme. Therefore, I think it depends on the type of poem you are writing, and the type of message you are trying to portray. |

I find it easier to rhyme, when I try not to rhyme it turns out to be a novel... just read my poem Death (Part one and two) they are stories, but they rhyme. When I rhyme I can control how my story flows, when I don't I find myself writing over 8 pages, its just a story, but.. its just right to rhyme :D |

I didn't read many (ok any) of the comments before me, but I do have something that may or may not have been said. See, I think rhyming makes things sound more poetic, but not rhyming is soo much easier. There is a poem I have in the poems I've written on this site, where I left out a line because I couldn't figure out what I should say. I knew exactly what to say, but i couldn't find a way to rhyme it. It makes me feel like the poems empty, but I rhymed the rest of the poem so why should I not whyme one stanza? So in conclusion I agree with the person above me. |

i totally agree.. the same things happeneded to me. with one of my poems i couldnt find a word to fit the way i wanted. so i agree to... rhyming is harder (if you are rhyming in more complex poems) |

For me, rhyming is so much easier. Although I do have a few poems that don't rhyme, for the most part all of mine rhyme. I can't seem to make it flow when it doesn't rhyme. My unrhymed poems seem choppy unless I really sit and redo them 100 times. And that is hard for me. |

I find it difficult to rhyme without sounding trite, but console myself with the thought that rhyming seems to be an exclusively English language preoccupation, and most of the rest of the world just writes what it wants, and if it rhymes it's a happy coincidence. The fact that English is such a bastard language (in the sense of borrowing words from a multitude of different languages) makes rhyming especially difficult, whereas in "purer" languages, many words have the same sounding ending anyway, making a rhyme easier to complete -- but I could just be totally mistaken ... are there any non-English poets out there who can back me up on this? |

I prefer free verse, but also have wrote many rhyming pieces.I have found that the poem dictates the form-rhyme or non-rhyming and I just go with it.I will say as one experinced in the literay publications(and as a previous editor of my own literary magazine publication) that rhyme is looked upon with contempt by most editors unless it is done very well, as it is considered the basic starting point of amateurs(not my words/feelings), though some publications accept rhyme. However it must be outstanding-not cliched(which is hard to pull off-use unusual rhymes or variations) and traditional forms if done right(no cliches) is always considered(never fall into the 'forced rhyme' trap), though free verse seems to be the most widely accepted in the literary magazines/poetry markets.I'm neither pro-free verse or pro-rhyme, but years of experience have shown me a lot.Write the poem in whatever form it comes out(and some poems do dictate their own form themselves).I've seen some fantastic, original rhyming pieces on this site, but have seen just as many cliched bad pieces.Using traditional forms help, but always be willing to try something different-don't lock yourself into a specific form/style. |

To sound in again on this topic, as I siad in the original post it's harder for me to not rhyme. It is what comes most natural to me and I am pretty versed in that particular skill. But I think that major most thing is I just associate poetry with rhyme, so when I'm making a constructive effort to write a poem, my natural inclination, disposition, is towards rhyme. Now, those who know me and my writing style and have read my essays, prose, and such, would tell you I write poetically poem or not, but when consciously writing a poem - unless the form, format, dictates that I don't rhyme or doesn't allow one to write a really good poem using/employng rhyme, or I am purposely writing for pretentious literaries without rhyme, rhyming is my natural preference, tendency!!! |

I find it harder to not rhyme . I find that the poems that don`t rhyme, only the ones that are truly written in a deep, poetic way are good . But that`s just me . |

This is what happens to me every time I try to write free verse. I write a line or two and the next line just starts to rhyme. It's like I have an idget in my computer that finds the rhyme without me noticing until I'm rereading it. then I have to redo it to make it flow better and the next thing I know, I have a poem that rhymes. Darn, I hate when that happens. |

It's difficult to rhyme... you have to be two steps ahead of yourself at all times... thinking of the format. But yes, what I do is rhyme some lines, and not the others, like a song... |

I absolutely cannot stand trying to write non rhyming poetry cuz i dont like stories and thats what they are...i like mine best when 2 lines in a 4 line stanza rhyme and the other 2 r just outta the blue lines that go with it...like this one from my poem Gossip |
