Why is it when you break up with someone you care about it never hurts as much as it does when they break up with you?

I disagree... Sometimes it does hurt you, just to see the pain in the other persons eyes... I guess that depends on how much you love the other person though.
Over all though, you're right, it does hurt more. There's a simple answer for that - and it's been answered twice. lol.
