While writing poetry i sometimes like to use a theasuares or go to rhymezone.com to help me with my rhyming. I found nothing wrong with it until somebody i knew said that it was cheating and i shouldnt use things like that well writing my own poetry. What do you think?

Look, there's nothing wrong with what you do. It's not cheating, it's learning, and I know cheating. My academic career was laden with it, and this is not cheating. Each time you use a theasuares or rhyming dictionary, you learn how to use different words and phrases, in ways you never thought. You learn how to play with language, maneuver linguistically, stirring the pot - which is our vast language - to create the perfect stew. Each time you use a theasuares or rhyming dictionary, you expand your knowledge of the language and your ability to make use of it. We are not born with full, and absolute knowledge of language and how to use it, we learn this over time, and are continually learning. What you are doing is not cheating but rather expanding your linguistic base!!!

Cheating? Not at all - as everyone else as already said, it's the same as learning - writing words from a book to use later in life, or in an exam. I think, if you used the dictionary every single time you needed to find a word, then it would be more of an 'Outside' poem, and not from the heart - but there really is no such thing as Cheating in poetry - with the sorrowful exception of copying people's work.

    Peace.

I'm agreeing with everyone else... We can't know the dictionary inside out... I use dictionary.com for the thesauraus and rhymezone.com for when I get stuck rhyming!! Thanks for rhymer.com Kristen I think that one is a bit better, so I shall be starting to use that one :)

hmm.. well... it's not exactly cheating.. but i think poetry should just come from you, and not from the internet.. or from anything for that matter... everyone uses their imagination and when they write they are inspired... but using inter. does somewhat give you inspiration to help you right poems.. altho i find it better to... well not use the internet.. i mean i dont really care, cuz im not you.. but i dont use the internet... sometimes when i get stuck on finding a rhyming word... i just think really hard.. and if it does'nt come.. i erase the sentence.. haha anyways, keep writing poems people!! =)

I was taught ... if you look it up, you'll remember ... and I still believe in this. So I don't think using a thesaurus is cheating. Care just has to be taken so that it doesn't seem forced.

i think that it's good to use a rhyming dictionary on the internet, sumtimes words just pop out to you and u know they belong in your poem... i mean, mayb it's not the most "natural" thing, but u learn, and pretty soon, it'll come natural, but we still need help.....
