What's your favorite Form/Format to write in???

Of the forms out there of poetry, what is your favorite to read or to write in. There are many different forms, genres of poetry out there, each with there own signature, style, and I like to know which ones you're found of, find interesting. State your favorite form along with what defines the format (the definition) in case, others have an inclination to try it. So, what's your favorite form of poetry???

    For example, I like Sonnets;

    Sonnet:
A Sonnet is a poem consisting of 14 lines (iambic pentameter) with a particular rhyming scheme:

    Examples of a rhyming scheme:

    #1) abab cdcd efef gg
    #2) abba cddc effe gg
    #3) abba abba cdcd cd

A Shakespearean (English) sonnet has three quatrains and a couplet, and rhymes abab cdcd efef gg.

An Italian sonnet is composed of an octave, rhyming abbaabba, and a sestet, rhyming
cdecde or cdcdcd, or in some variant pattern, but with no closing couplet.

Usually, English and Italian Sonnets have 10 syllables per line, but Italian Sonnets can also have
    11 syllables per line.

French sonnets follow in this same pattern, but normally have 12 syllables per line.

I enjoy writing sonnets...I really do...

but sometimes writing without any set form is so...I dunno...free=)

I prefer to read poetry without a rhyming scheme...

The Senryu is rather interesting, probably because it can make a statement in only seventeen words divided into three lines.

My favorite form of poetry is freestyle, though.

Bob, I personally think people who partake of writing sonnets should stick to the syllabic count, as well. I think that one of most crucial things for a sonnet to have is that it meets the required line and syllable structure, format. You can vary on the rhyming scheme and your iambic pentameter doesn't have to be perfect. Iambic Pentameter isn't always easy to use. Going from a soft to a hard sound, doesn't always come together well and sometimes, doesn't fit within the natural flow of the poem, but you have to at least keep the syllable count and basic sonnet structure in tact. Unfortunately some don't chose to bother to meter their sonnets, syllable count is of no importance to them, but I feel you don't have a sonnet without it. You can change the rhyme scheme, fall short in the iambic pentameter department, but you have to stay true to the format's structure. In my book, if the syllable count is off, the whole sonnet is off!!!

My poems take on a form/format that suits it at the time. Poetry is not something I can tie down to a set form....usually I just right how I feel...free verse you could say.

I admire how poets like Shakespeare could tie themselves down to such clever rhyming schemes, yet maintain the essence of the poetry....

i agree with lost_laureate, the form of poetry can depend on the mood you are in at the time, i find the best poems that i write are when i just let them flow. Adopting particualr styles is great and shows your understanding of poetry but sometimes i feel that a less structured poem show more raw emotion.

oh i love sestinas. but i dont write them often. the ones ive written i guess they're ok.

ive also written a villanelle. apparently i did it wrong but whatever. i don't really like them very much. you need to have amazing repeating lines. although mine turned out ok, even though i messed up the rhyme scheme.

ive never written a engish or italion sonnet because im weak. i did write a kyrille sonnet(french i guess) i dont know if i did it write. but i did it for a challenge. for what it is i think it came out ok.

i tried writing a ghazal. it failed entirely.

i know it seems like i only write in form. but i don't usually. only sometimes when im really in the mood. i like trying different kids of forms but free style works best for most of what i write.

My poems are more free verse, i try to write using my feelings, i find it harder to express how i feel when i use these rhyming schemes and formats.

I like trying different styles, but I usually write in quatraine format with an ABAC DEDF GHGI ect. rhyme scheme. I don't really know a real definition or name for that, but yeah!

when im writing, i let the poem (or lyric) dictate the form, i feel like when i go into something predetermined what it needs to be, im restricting myself and my thoughts
