We have so many talented poets at my school, but sometimes I think that truly original and wonderful talent is stifled and oppressed because of marking schemes and rules....but with poetry are there rules....? Is there such a thing a poem thats too long, or too contraversal..

    Can poetry be wrong?

I hate to say this but no, if someone tells you your poem is wrong, they have to be a complete moron, for lack of a better term. Poetry is all in what the writer wants it to be, there is no wrong way to write poetry, being as it is to express what you feel, not what the reader wants to see. In certain cases like writing for school, if you don't follow the format given, then it's wrong to the teacher in a grading aspect, but it is in no way a wrong poem.

I would post - But it seems everyone has stated all my points of view!! I don't think that poetry can be at all wrong from the writers point of view - it's in 'The eyes of the beholder' whether they enjoyed the poem or not. If you have to write a poem to s marking scheme - then write it to the marking scheme, and don't go off at an angle and begin to write outside what you will be marked on. However - in the world of P&Q The only wrong poetry is poetry that isn't yours, that you are taking the credit for . . .

Thanks guys.....brilliant response..... I totally agree. Right or wrong I'm open to people giving me some "constructive criticism" on some of my work... However I have to admit if not wrong -poetry can be out of touch in that sometimes it is no longer poetry but a song, narrative and even a speech at the same time? Breaking these boundaries isnt necessarily a bad thing though?

Poetry is a combination of visualization, observation, imagination and creative use of language. Visualization means awakening and stimulating the senses within mind. Poetry requires extraordinary observations of ordinary things and fresh insights to inspire senses. A strong imagination helps break free from the limits of ordinary, routine thinking. imagination is a bottomless source of original ideas where poetry can grow. The Poetry provides guidance in the mechanics of poetry such as rhyme, meter and metaphor. These aspects of poetry are blended together with visualization experiments and observation activities to help express a unique ideas. Poetry is much more than reading and writing. Poetry comes from the will to help others, the effort of sharing and being socially concerned. Poetry displays compassion for the world and its beings. Like the branches of a tree in the jungle, poetry reaches in many directions. floats upon the wind and paints the colours of the universe of joy singing the universal song of poetry.

and poetry can't be wrong! but to the writer...

and i agree with aria, in this content the answer is NO the poetry can’t be wrong, because it is part of the truth that add up to what we call existence and also to what that is nonexistence!
