Something tells me that whatever people talk about in the chat, it sure ain`t poetry, and therefore there is no point in it.

There is always MSN etc for those who can`t cope without the chat...

Agreed. We have a discussion forum and optional e-mail services. What do we need a chat room for?

You'd go through hell trying to get rid of it again. It's almost not worth having the time spent in the chat room free because you'd spend just as much time arguing with people about it being gone.

Letting it stay on isn't a huge nuisance or anything to us elves. If it being there is keeping some people happy, then we'll continue watching over it. It doesn't take much energy doing that, what, with our magical powers and all.
