How To Start a Poem

When I'm in the place you are, I sometimes start out with one item. For example a rose, or a person.

Example From one of MY poems:

    1 Rose for the wife
    Handed with such grace
As the wind whips without a trace
    You walk so silently
Such a sorrowful look upon your face

Something like that helps me to start a poem and work from there.

    Good Luck

I look through quotes of the subject I want to write about. For example My best friend has loads of Dark quotes written on her walls and they inspire me.

I have to say, I don't tend to have this problem. I agree - sometimes I don't know what to write. But I believe that writing comes from three places within a person:

Mind :- You have to know the vocabulary to rhyme with, and the words to use.

Heart :- It's good to write about personal experience, and it's often love, hate, or strong feelings that you write about.

Soul :- It is impossible to speak your heart. And so your soul writes down the words for you. It's the thing that puts the images into your mind, and the thing that gives you the desire to write out your heart.

If I can't think of a good first line, I just sit there and let my soul give it to me. It takes time, but it's usually worth it in the end . . .

    Peace. [Sole]

Just write and don't worry about how to start or how it ends up being :)

I find that if you write what you're feeling the words will most of the time just come to you as long as you have a general direction you would like to go
