The tree thing might be hard, because it has to be a fictional story...

Maybe it's not the same, but we used to have to write stories for exams called SATS in year 6 . .. I found it much easier to just write the first thing that came to my mind. Rather than planning your story too much - focus on the skills you intend to include within the story - useful metaphors for example.
