I think every poet who consider themselves an artist would like to achieve fame, to be recognized for their artistry. I think it's safe to safe that if they think highly enough of themselves and of their work to condider themselves an artist and their work artistry, they want others to recognize that, as well. For, what is fame but mass recognition and whom among us that consider themselves very talented doesn't want to be recognized for it, for that. Now, there are some trappings, as far as fame is concerned. Some in their want for fame sacrifice the soul of their work in the process and their souls as well. That is to say, they extract what makes them and their work substantive, unique, special, what gives there work its character, its essence, in favour of what's superficially appealing or the topic that reignis, is fashionable, at the moment. I think when an artist loses his joy, when he no longer revels in his work and relishes what he does, he is no longer an artist but a sterile contactor (worker bee). But it is not Fame that makes him that way, but losing his inner light. |

If they aim for fame then it is their vanity, just what a shame. Bear in mind that most true artists and writers attained true real fame long after their lifetime. |

Well the thing is people here mostly write for fun. So its not a big deal if you dont write a poem that follows any rules at all, but I find it very intresting when I find poems that are written in a almost professional way because it helps me to improve myself by reading it. By commenting I can hopefully get a comment too that is going to helpful for me to improve my writing. I write because it's fun but I do also want to improve my writing so I do need some educated ones looking at my poems too. But I also want all the others to comment because I want to get an understanding in how my poems are understood. If they are boring, too hard or too something else... :-p |

I agree. For me it's important to learn the "proper" ways of writing poems AND writing poems that are mainstream, wich doesnt nessesarily mean those have to be 2 different poems. The same poem can be properly written and be mainstream and easy to enjoy. |

I think that if you write for "Fame" you won't get as much pleasure from writing as if you write fro yourself, because you will always be worried about other peoples opinion. |

Fame or popularity. If you read such literary critics and canonical critics such as Samuel Johnson, Harold Bloom, and others, you will realize that those writers who have meaning, depth, and greatness don't need to worry because they will be remembered. Would you consider Shakespeare famous, poe, melville, dickens, thoreau, king. Shakespeare, Poe and King were (are for king) famous in their day (Poe with the common people), but they are now remembered. Melville and thoreau were very unpopular. They actually had a hard time selling their literature to people. But a person would be hard pressed to find a person in America who hasn't heard or read any thing by Herman or Henry. Fame and fortune don't really mean anything. They pass with your life. The object is to be remembered. That in itself far surpasses fame. But according to litereary critics the only way to become remembered is by keeping the depth, emotions, ideals, philosphies, morality, and Questions in your writing. So aim to be canonical, aim to be remembered. |

What I found intresting is that those who do not want fame, but want to acheive a higher meaning in their work, acheive fame in their life. |

Anybody who says a real artist screws the fame or whatever or says that it isn't art if it is done for fame, listen to yourselves. Who gave you the magic sceptor to deign what is and isn't art depending upon the person's intentions. Yes it is still art if meant to make money or mean for fame. There wouldn't be art if it didn't make money, don't forget that people have needs. And don't forget that artists are human, not some abstract group of all powerful perfect, necessaries to society. People fall sucseptible to greed and lust and what not. Does that make what they do any less art than someone else. Hell no. Stop trying to put restrictions on something because you believe you are it. (To Brandon) |

I belvie that they should inspire for the real meaning.. by inspiring for the fame when they get it people might see that they are not being true to themselves and they could eventually lose it.. by aiming for the meaning even if they are no longer famous or well known they will have the meaning and thats all that matters |

fame is something you can't. don't plan for. however, if you want success, and still be an 'artist' you can do that. to do that you just need talent. and ambition. |

Most people grow up wanting to be famous. I did [am? I guess i'm still a kid]. But after thinking about it for a while, thinking about how different my life would be with fame, I decided I'd rather not,and let it catch up with me. People who try to get famous and acctually love what they do [and they're good at it] great for them. I'm not writing this to bring them down. All I'm saying is that fame shouldn't be something you thrive for. It should be something you happen upon. |

Well, i think you should just write what you feel. I dont think ur really a true writer if you just write whts "kool" or what everyone wants to hear. People should just stay true to theirselves. |

it would be good for both. no one can survive famous without meaning, and no one with meaning can survive without being famous... (i mean, look at Buddha and Jesus... they had real meanings and they STILL were famous!) if it's balanced out, then all is good. |

If the only thing someone wrote for was too be famouse or known or make money, it's like...it's like ripping up a piece of beautiful art. It can't be about other people and what they think, which is the media and fame, or it's not your own, really. Well I suppose it is...but it lacks meaning, which is important. |

No offense, but I kind of think anyone who thinks ANY poet achieves fame in his or her lifetime is dreaming a bit much. Also, why would you want your only fans to be people who are easily fooled? It seems pointless to me. |

well, Kate, I think THE BEATS are an exception to your rule, but then, they were shameless self-promoters, war protesters, and drug advocates. |

Why? because art is one of the only jobs that gives me any sense of purpose in this world, art inspires me to get up in the morning everyday, art inspires passion and conversation in others, because everybody has a certain niche that is best suited to their talents, and artistic expression is mine, because having any other job, as finanicially well off it may make me (though I hate being poor), I couldn't measure success on financial...at all. |
