i think that in order to write good poetry you need to experiment with different styles, topics, and formats so that you can find which ones you are best at and also improve

you also need to have strong feelings and thoughts about the topic you are trying to write about, otherwise you'll just get stuck

another thing which also helps is to read other peoples work so that you can see what works and what doesn't, it really helps for inspiration and appreciate other peoples poetry will give you a motivation to write.

always write on paper, not a computer, because then, instead of editing as you write and deleting things, you can just cross it out and then it's still there if you want to use it later. never throw anything away, the amount of times iv written a poem and thought it was rubbish, only to read it again later and realise that its actually really good, or at least bits of it are!

i also find that its useful to write down little thoughts and feelings, or just phrases that i hear or think so that i can use them in a poem or use them to inspire me to write.

What helps me, is I keep a small notebook on me at all times. Sometimes I have a good idea that I know I won't remember, I write it in the notebook. Also, I've written down random silly things my friends have said and they've inspired me. The notebook I have is only a little bigger than a deck of cards and I can just slip it in my purse.
