I would recommend that you see the circle as an extension of your own energy and when opening I clap to the four directions and push my energy outwards until I have the desired circumference for whatever I am attempting to manifest or expell.
In closing the circle reverse the process.
I would also highly recommend a book called Spells, Charms, Talismans and Amulets by Pamela Ball published by Arcturus ISBN 1-84193-051-2

She goes extensively into the use of candles, different colours for different rituals - the use of crystals etc. She also provides a list of her sources and web addresses.
