is it there consitancy? their different styles? how many poems they have? what makes a poet a poet? Because every one can write poems....but what does a real poet have that others don't? Does a poet have to be able to write all styles or have a main style but switch it up a bit? |

Poets come in all different shapes and sizes, just as people, for they are people. They might write the shortest or longest poems in the world. People would still be amazed by their work. They don't have to be consistent. They can be plain or decorated. They can have any style. Good poets simply touch people's hearts in some way... and that makes them good... |

A good poet knows how to thread a good poem. A good poet has fans who find their writing beautiful even if nobody can understand the poem because of the use of complicated language. (BIG words, lol.) |

very true...its important that they understand exactly what they are trying to say and know how to express what they want to say regardless of what anyone else thinks of what they are writing. |

You definately have to get something across to the reader and an ability to make people understand what the poem is about however obscurely it's written is important. I think it's more how strongly the emotion is brought out through the words they choose rather than how long and impressive the words themselves are. You can write a powerful poem with simple words. I agree, good poets simply touch people's hearts in some way... |

I don't think there is a deffinition of a "poet" because anyone can be a poet....I guess it's just a love of exploring things through writting because If you think about it poems don't even have to rhyme. Poetry is a way of expressing your creativity/curiosity. Anyone can be a poet...some people are just to embarassed to admit it! |

For me, it is the language usage (word choice), how effectively they express whatever it is they're trying to express within the piece, poem. It's also the Structure, Tone, Rhythm, Flow, Diction, Imagery, and overall Fluency of the poem. How the poem plays to the ear. The poem's usage/use of language (how well it uses the words within to tie everything together). I want to be captivated, by the eloquence of your expression, by the elegance of your epithetic excellence. The number one key to a poem for me is the beauty and/or effectiveness, in and of its expression and how well that is translated and expressed, in an elegant, eloquent, and artistic manner!!! For me, it's all about the artistic beauty, how well they've crafted their work (as I said earlier how well it reads and palys to the ear -- basically, how well the poem is brought tohether ). |

heart and soul. if you write with your heart, the emotions will leak through your pen and touch the readers. that is what makes a good poet, in my opinion. |
