I see more and more, schools that only allow people of a certain religion or race into it. What do you make of it? And how you think this will effect the children?

Personally I haven't heard of this but from what you've said I think you could argue that it is a good and a bad thing:
    Good-
You could say that this will eliminate the problem of people disagreeing with schools having group prayers and the such. Also you could say that it would help the children feel 'accepted' and not be picked on for their beliefs. It would also free them up to learn more about their religion.

    Bad-
On the other side you could argue that it is very discriminatory i.e. a catholic only school might have brilliant science facilities and a Protestant only school might have brilliant sports facilities. This means the Catholics will have a better education in science whether they would prefer to do it over sport or not and vi-ca versa. It would also be inciting segregation and competition between race/religion.

I feel the negatives out way greatly here as we would be destroying all of what Martin Luther King Jr and the such, had to strive so hard to achieve.

This will obviously effect the children in an adverse effect, in early years of our life we learn so much about the world and it's inhabitants and these children will miss out on learning one of our most important features, our diversity.

Why bother worrying about the de jure segregation of race and religion when there is plenty of de facto segregation as it is? I worry a lot more about the economic stratification of modern society and its consequences for minorities than I do about private christian schools only accepting people who will pray with them.

Sean: If you worry about it...Then do something about it. This is a thread to discuss many private schools segregation from the other races and creeds.

And is it a positive or a negetive role in society...

If you can't answer that...Then please leave..Thank you

Going by the original post, 'private school segregation' doesn't seem to show up too much. I'm answering the questions as I see fit. What I make of the situation is that private schools are only worsening a situation that was bad enough from de facto segregation, and that the effects of that segregation can already been easily seen if you just took a look at some studies concerning what de facto segregation in public schools does towards racial and ideological tolerance.

What does de facto mean? I looked it up in the dictionary but I was still confused could you explain please?

It means 'the way things are' as opposed to de jure, which means 'the way the law says it should be'. De facto segregation means that although there is no law or regulation saying that people should be segregated, they often are due to external circumstances, like differences in wealth, and living near people you feel comfortable around.

I've never heard of this...but I think it sucks. How can we teach our kids not to be racists if we segregate their place of education? I think it's moronic and who ever came up with the idea should be shot between the eyes. It makes me think that all of our historic heros fought for nothing...and THAT makes me sick!
