let the poems just come out, dont think about what words need to rhyme with what.. just let it all flow out of your heart.

very much so...poetry is from the heart its what you feel and what you think, your not someone else so dont try and write like someone else...to be able to be unique is just the ability to write and think for your self

I love music and I feel Music is a form of poety.
So one thing I dislike is when an artist's songs all sound a like...
    Its called diversity!

i just started getting this voice inside my head 2 weeks ago... telling me what to write. it's always the ending or the middle and i have to build up on it. it's kinda cool.

I agree with that thought....I have been writing for a long time..I enjoy reading the work of others, but I believe that writing is unique to the person putting the words together...each one has to create their own style of writing..and if we write as often as we can a style will emerge...
To begin a piece I write what I am thinking...and after I get all of my thoughts together..then I create a poem..it does not have to be perfect in the beginning..writing is a process...and I never complete a piece without haveing rewrote it maybe several times...finally I am satisfied with the results and so I have a Poem...It will be mine using my thoughts, ideas and my way of putting those elements together....when we do that often enough...we go on to the different forms and try to perfect as many as we can...free verse..sonnets...rictameters, haikus. and so forth...if you really like writing it can be a wonderful way of expressing you inner most thoughts......just something that I thought I would like to add to the disscusion...

I know you were generalizing with the bit about them being witty, but I get your point: something which is written "from the heart" can often express nothing more than a series of situations.

What I like to read is a poem that draws me in and carries me along with the character or situation; that involves me in some deeper way than simply being expected to get through it and vote.

I probably read 30 or so poems a day on here because I do admire the desire the write poetry. But as I said in a comment on one of the recent multitudinous "rape stories" writing from the heart can soon appear rather bland if the context is so much like everything else out there.

Writnig from the heart does not make you unique. Why not? go read all the other posts that have over a hundred poets saying they all write from the heart; then actually read their poems. The majority of them you won't find a big difference. The heart doesn't make a poem unique. Neither does only using your thoughts and feelings. If you can only use your own thoughts or feelings then you have stipulated rules upon yourself that crams you into a box, and your writing will never evolve into what it has the potential to be.

If we're on the subject of whether writing from the heart is that influential on how a poem works, can I tempt some of you to read my poem, "Suddenly Empty"?

It is not based on personal experience, but is purely ficticious. However, I tried to imagine from the offset how the main character would feel about what is a harrowing situation to deal with. People I've showed it to have had vastly differing opinions on it. Which is what I'd guessed and hoped would be the case.

Alas, We all live under the illusion that we are unique, but look closer and you can see we are all unquestionably the same.
