How Joss Whedon killed the X-Men

No doubt you've seen at least one of the movies and can appreciate how action oriented the series is.

So, Marvel look to Whedon, of Buffy (so so) and Firefly (fan-smegging-tastic) fame, to take on X-Men and give it his own brand of drama. fine, I say, give it a go old son. I loved Firefly, let's see what you can do with something you didn't create.

In short he's killed it.. dead.

Comic books of the Marvel line are in general a slugfest jam packed with intrigue, mayhem betrayal and a slight touch of romance. A perfect balance of fantasy and reality for a great story.

What does Whedon do? Yurp, turns it into a non-stop 'get it on'-athon And calls it Astonishing X-Men. Astonishingly bad maybe. I prefer the title X-Men: Humpage.

The latest issue I bought had ONE... yes ONE solitary page where a mutant uses a power. And that's Kitty Pryde (the young girl in the X-Men 3 movie) phasing through the floor because she was getting it on with Pitor Rasputin (Colossus) and he 'made her' do it.

And what about the bad guys? I know, says Whedon, lets have them sitting in space all sinister-like and have then rub their hands evilly. May as well have Dastardly and Muttley on top of a cliff with a huge boulder and a stick.

One day the head guys at Marvel will realise the mistake they made, but until they remove their collective heads from Whedon's dark side I don't think I'll bother reading Astonishing X-Men again.

So, if you want to get a decent artist medium with a great story arc do not venture that way. Get Revelations or Batman:1 year later instead.

Speaking of good comics, you might want to look at any Preacher graphic novel, or some of the Hellblazer, Constantine collections.

All his Engines being my favourite.

Preacher is hilariously wrong in so many ways it becomes so right. I refer you to #39.

I just realised that the fan fiction (slash fiction) for Astonishing X-Men will have good and evil fighting each other and no gay sex.

I did not know you were a graphic novel fan Bret….Lol

I think Astonishing X-men is a good series, as something you would read when you are extremely bored or there is nothing to watch.

I quite frankly like the Uncanny X-men; it has a much more better graphics and storyline than Astonishing X-men. I actually like and it was my first time reading his works. Neil Gaiman’s “The sandman”. I must say wow…

I like Fables as well…But then that is just me…

*Alec Guiness Obi Wan voice* I've been reading comics since... oh, before you were born.

I started with Marvel's (progressing from the Beano and Dandy) Dare Devil as a nipper way back in '82.

I just hate how this particular series detracts from what the X-Men are at their core. Joss Whedon has turned it into an episode of Eastenders basically.

Pick up a copy of Watchman before they kill it on the silver screen.
