Amatuers and poets

well, considering the deffintion of an Amatuer is:

"A person who engages in an art, science, study, or athletic activity as a pastime rather than as a profession."

I would honestly have to say I am an Amatuer writter, no doubt about that.

    Peace, Joe

I am definitely an amateur. I have much room to improve, and although i wish i could write better then what i do at times, i'm also proud of what i write. I would also like to be able to consider myself as a poet one day.

it is so fun to sit here and watch people argue semantics. Why, people it is absolutely useless. People are basically arguing their own definitions of these words.

David Zurick, since you were the one who started this thread, you should state the definitions of each. If you don't feel like doing that, then the title of the thread should be something like this: how many people out there believe it is really worth my valuable time to read your poetry and why? You could cut through tth ecrap and get what you really wanted to get at. Then you could put a warning at the end of your post: if you post and say yes, and I read your poetry, but come to realize by the end of it that it sucked and I will never get back the last fiveminutes i spent reading, then I will be very harsh and up front with what I think of your writing. This way you would be happy, everyone else would know better and couldn't complain if they didn't agree with your comments or votes, and you could judge as to whose an amatuer or poet and post your thoughts after reading.

I thought the whole point of not having a set definition was to explore how people label themselves based off their own personal understanding of the two words...

I guess I overestimated the meaning behind the original post.

somewhere along the line he stated that this is way easier than just asking who is the best unappreciated writers.

I'm a poet as i write poems. i'm not saying i'm brilliant, but i get my point, event or feeling across through a poem.

Damn I didn't expect this thread to get so long. I read all of it, and I've come to find that the label of "poet" or "amatuer" doesn't really matter anymore :D, thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone and keep writing what you do.

I believe that we are all poets... just that some of us don't write that poetry, but we live it, we feel it, taste it, hear it, sense it, speak it. Poetry is beauty, I think. More than that, poetry is emotion. Opinion.

Amateur? Well, I am not a professional, which is the opposite of amateur, correct? If you mean that I have not been writing poetry for long, you are correct. But I have been feeling and expressing for a long time...

    So, yes, poet.

Technically, I am a poet because I write poetry, but my poetry really isn't the best...or near the best, so I'm gonna have to anwer amature.

This may be a 'stupid' question, but how can you tell the difference between an amatuer and a poet, or what's the difference?

I think everyone has a poetic soul. SO we all have the ability to be a poet, but some people don't try or don't care, or stop just because someone has criticizd(sp?) their work.

Well thats my opinion so far. I'm honestly not sure what I am yet.. is that so horrible?

    **edit**

In other words, what do you think I am?

i consider myself an amatuer poet. I decided to come here and let the world read my poems and quotes because why throw it away when you can share it with others.

"by this you are an amatuer with the talent and skills to become a superb writer and poet, however that is up to you on how diligently you seek it....Peace"

^ Thanks, Dwelt. I really appreciate your opinion, although I hope you don't judge on just one of my poems. But thanks for encouraging me by saying that I have the talent to be a poet. That's what I've been striving to be for a very long time.

After not posting in this thread for a bit, I still would define myself as an amatuer. I'll continue reading poetry both oldern and modern and maybe I'll learn from those how to eventually be to where I can consider myself a poet.
