Do any of you know what makes a good poet?

I have only ever started writing poetry because of my recent broken heart after a 2 year relationship broke, and i've read too many things about "People need ideas, inspiration" And i look at them like false poets because they need ideas to write, i believe what makes a poet is if they write what is in their heart. No false crap. You must understand what i mean before you go posting an answer. But wnyway what do you think?

    Cheers

    I disagree.

I don't see how needing ideas to write and writing from the heart are different. Just because some poets are more cerebral than others doesn't mean they aren't poets.

simple answer to a simple question. Good poems makes a good poet. Doesn't matter how or where or what kind, type, style, or truth or from the heart or not or false. A good poem is a good poem. And good poets have lots of good poems.

Poeple who diagree with what i believe to me are false poets. i dont care who you are, if you write something false you may be a poet but you havn't ever felt what you are writing, so why write? I dont expect many of you to understand me, reasons already being. Just try to hook onto what it im trying to say.

Well that's an interesting opinion, but I disagree all the same. I like Cory's answer.

You can make up a term like 'false poet', but that doesn't mean it holds any more 'truth' than you ascribe it.

I would also tend to agree with Cory. If you're a good poet, you don't necessarily have to write what you are feeling, but after the poem is done (if it is good), you certainly should get a good understanding of what said feeling really feels like.

Yep, that may be hard to follow, but that's it.

I think a good poet (writer in general) can write outside themselve, can write about things they never seen, felt, or experienced and bring the thruth of that experience across. Writing from the heart and having to have experienced, felt, what you are writing about is much too over rated. I've written several poems, pieces, from the standpiont of a woman and I am not one, but that fact didn't make them any less effective. In fact, many women would tell you I expressed the topic, thruth, which the piece, pieces focused on rather well, and that they couldn't have said things better themselves. It's how effectively you write, not how personal the experience!!!

A good editor or the comments that others make help to make a good poet.

How can you be a good poet, if you dont have any inspirations. You can write about something you never experience, but you're poem will have no feelings and emotions in it because u haven't actually experience it.

  • Cory Mastrandrea

Not true lisa. Think of it this way. There is nothing new under the sun. Every problem or experience in the world today has happened in the past as well, just maybe not with the same specefics. But there is nothing new under the sun. All human have the same emotions. There is no human that has the ability to feel a different emotion than the rest of the humans in the world. Therefore, if you come up with a problem or situation in your poetry or writing, you can merely say, how would I react in this situation and then attribute your reaction (or maybe someone's reaction whom you have seen in that situation) to your poem. And when it is all said and done I bet your would be pretty close. That is just for a writer's point of view.

As for in general, what you said was slightly ignorant. People share there friend's pain all the time, or when people see the save the children commercials emotions well up for some. That is why some people cry while reading or going to a movie, because they are charing the emotional experience even though never going through the actual situation.

i think everyone is a poet.....we all have it in us to write its just some are better at getting what they mean and want out and on to paper wereas others have the whole poem in there head and can read it in there thinking its great but when it comes to writting it down there stumped-they dont know why or how they just know that in there head they can read it and they cant put it on to paper and as they try to they get confused and frustrated very easily so end up giving up-all they need is a little encouragement to get there meanings and words out.....

......ive helped my friend who is a great poet but at times she gets stuck and just needs a little help which i give her cus whats 10 mins out your day to make your friend happy that she conqoured the poem finally and that it reads well.

    with or without indepth feelings.

To be a good poet, you need to wright good poetry:P and be able to get the message you want out to the readers..

    Umm, no.
    I disagree completely.

...you got inspired, in a sense, by the pain that you felt.
    An idea, just different.
you don't have the right to call anyone a "false poet". No one does. Because I sometimes wonder if there is even any false poetry. Poetry is poetry, and just because some isn't good doesn't mean it's false (kind off topic, but relating to the other statement I made.)
Inspiration sparks the part of my mind and soul that gives me the words when I write. Maybe it's like going down a slide.
You don't get very far unless you push off.
Your broken heart pushed you down the slide.
    Are you a false poet?
Rain pushes me down. Life, bullies, love, happiness.
    Inspiration

Ok. If I write because I love rain, I've never actually felt a love for rain? If I write because I'm inspired by the happiness that I get when I'm in love, I've still never felt happy or in love? So basically, in your opinion, the only thing you can write is if you have a broken heart?
If you started writing because you were sad, and you think inspiration is false, then, in your opinion, no one can feel anything they write unless it's exactly what you felt, hey?
That's the message I'm getting here, and I've read your post through more than once.
So you might as well just tell everyone nothing is good unless it's exactly like yours.
    Nice originality.

There is no such thing as a good or bad poet!

Many poets have their own techniques... just because someone may not agree with how they write or what they write about, they cant be called bad poets...

Nothing i can do or say will make you any better. Though i believe there are both good and bad poets in this small little world, there's really nothing specific that makes you a good or bad poet. maybe you find that contradictory, maybe you don't. But if you suck, it's because i hate your style. If you don't, i probably liked your style. And the only reason why i would think that you good, is if i envy you. Which in my delusional yet perfect world... that will probably never ever happen. :p
