Oh, okay. I honestly don't know what people's problems are. I don't see anything wrong with either of them. People chose to express themselves in many ways. They are being unique, and different. Its better then everyone being the same. Overall, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT! People are just pathetic now a days. If someone does have a problem with it, then they are probably not secure with their own lives.
I know you asked why people hate them so much, and I think people who do hate them, just have nothing else to do.

A stereotypical emo? Ok, so this is what ive gathered from a purely stereotypical view -

Kids who have rediculously long fringes across their eyes
    Dyed black hair
Eye liner underneath the eyes in stupid patterns
Kids who are "depressed" about their lives, even though they have nothing to be depressed about
Kids who cut themselves for attention because they think its cool
Wearing skinny jeans (which look hideous on -anyone- by the way)
    And Band Tees
    And converse shoes
    Wearing studded belts.
Listening to typical emo music such as Panis at the Disco, taking back sunday etc.
Think they are punk and Old Schooljust because they have a hello kitty ourse and an original Nintendo.
    They were black rimmed glasses.
Oh, and they cry a lot.

As said, this is the stereotypical "Emo"

"Also. "Emo" has made life hell for anyone who does, or ever has, self-harmed."

    ^^
So people basically blame 'emo' for their self-harming?.. I see. I don't think the problem is being 'emo', I think the problem is within itself.

"Im talking about the poser 'emo's' who just happen to have found out that they are 'emo' in the last year. "

    ^^
What defines a person as a poser?.. Aren't we all technically posers since we are trying to be like everyone else?.. For someone who doesn't follow labels, why are you calling people 'posers' isn't that a label too?..

  • Sean Allen

Emo is short for emotional. It is a subgenre of alternative rock. It is a style of clothes and a general philosophy about life.

  • Sean Allen

I'd assume that associating with a trend is a common behavior in many people, just a natural tendency. I wouldn't take it so far as to say that they'll labelling themselves as much as they are making themselves welcome among people who they consider their brethern.

Or some people are like that. I'd suppose others like labelling themselves because it makes it easy for others to judge them, justifying their mistrust in other people.

Has anyone noticed that this thread, which was originally posted about emos AND goths, has turned out to be focused on all emos...once again?

    Haha

Well I don't know. I've been through that "I wish I were emo" stage and honestly, I couldn't do it. LOL...because I'm just who I am and I don't have the kind of money that's necessary to clean out my wardrobe and fill it with band t-shirts and mega-tight jeans. I'm not rich!! And I'm not creative enough to do anything with my hair, or redecorate and old shirt, or do ANYTHING original. So I basically gave up on that, lol!!

I still ADORE Taking Back Sunday though. I don't know how anyone can think they're an emo band. To me, they're more like Pop and Alternative Rock mixed. Same with Panic! At the Disco.

But I can't STAND bands like Underoath, Against Me! or anything like that-that's purely screaming.

And being a Goth was too expensive, too, although I did get farther on that than the emo thing. It was easier because whenever I got new things, I insisted that they be black. But with emo things, they can be any color but they have to be a certain style, and my judgement stinks.

And now that I'm past both of those stages, I have a closet full of black clothes and tight jeans that I've outgrown and ballerina shoes that hurt my ankles and I'd never dream of wearing anywhere else.

Did you even read the post you quoted from? She specifically said that was a stereotypical view. Please try to read things before posting about them. Thank you.

ღ*KiM*ღ- Panic! At the disco is not emo.....Have you even heard them??? Taking Back Sunday, The Used, And Hawthorne Heights.... That Is emo. And skinny jeans look good on skinny girls- By the way. Not trying to pick a fight, just gently correcting.

And I tried dressing in black with eyeliner, wrist bands ect. for a concert. But sadly I think I looked out of place still. You need to have the attitude to pull something like that off. But I'm most definatly a sucker for sexy emo guys. Have you seen the "MakeDamnSure" video from taking back sunday??? It makes me melt.

OMG!.. Panic! at the Disco became emo?..
    what the.. ??

Since when?.. I've been missing out. Geez, I've been caught up in labelling every band out there, I think I might have done it all wrong.

Who cares what kind of music they are, music is made for listening, not labelling.

  • Lost & Delirious

I don't think I could even label myself, I'm a mixture of many different things. I think labels are stupid and fake, and sometimes they can do some damage.
I have a friend who wants to be emo and even labels herself, and sometimes she even criticizes me because of the way I dress, and the music I listen...I hate when people do that. The thing is, I can like and even love all kinds of clothes, all kinds of music...But I choose what I want, not caring about following a trend, or a pattern. I think that's what's important.

I personally do not hate goths or emos. I'm a bit emo and goth inside. People don't like them because they're different, don't laugh, lacking fun and just strange. Some people might be afraid of them. But those are just stereotypes, I know some goths that are just like regular people, except for their appearence.
About two years ago, a goth at our school was valedvictorian.

This is such a confusing topic...
Panic! at the disco is has not been, is not, and will never be emo. I can guarantee that. I agree that "the used" is definately an "emo" band, if you were to label, but they are a terrific band.
About labeling yourself, I also think its wrong. People may dress "emo" or "goth", but they`re just expressing themselves in a manner which may involve the black clothing, black hair, etc. I completely agree that you are you. Noone really has the right to label you, especially if you`re going to be labeled on something as stupid as the clothing you wear.
Stereotypical emos.. now thats just weird. I never even heard of such. Just beacuse people have eyeliner underneath their eyes in what may seem to you as a "stupid pattern", they may like it like that. If someone is depressed, there is always going to be a reason. Most people who cut truly don`t do it for attention, and in my life i have never heard of someone who thought self harm was "cool"

People will often use stereotypes to try to explain their point of view on some thing. "The prep in front of me" may seem easier to say then some thing like "The girl who wears trendy clothes, comes from a good family, and is popular who sits in front of me...." I agree it is stupid. Everything listed about that girl really has nothing to do with that girls ‘true self’. She may be a great person who some one decided to avoid just because she looked like’prep’.

I could NEVER fit any label. I have a little bit of every stereotype type in me, from emo, to prep, and each one of them has some thing in them I think is kool, a good style, a good attitude, what ever. Has anyone ever been stereotype typed as normal? That elusive term that no one can ever agree upon...

    Quoting a Quote:

“"Also. "Emo" has made life hell for anyone who does, or ever has, self-harmed."

    ^^
So people basically blame 'emo' for their self-harming?.. I see. I don't think the problem is being 'emo', I think the problem is within itself.”

No, I think he was saying some thing along the lines of people who self-harm because for attention or because they think it’s kool, or makes them more ‘Emo’ make it harder on people who do do it for other reasons.

Some people believe that Goths and Emos are just whiney kids who complain to complain, and hate because of that… I would look great as a Goth, but I would also feel stupid wearing black in the middle of summer, and still smiling my butt off because my sense of humor is over active and I laugh at everything… Then I’d laugh at me laughing because stereotypical Goths aren’t suppose to smile that much.

so true!!!!! people see scars and aask if someone is emo. happened to me. and most emos are snobby little rich kids who dont get their way and TRY to hate the world, but they just cant. theyre basically preps who try to be goth... aka POSERS, and i hate posers. its stupid, labeling yourself and others around you. i hate it when people label me. im me, deal with it. everyone should think like that in my opinion. but again, thats just me.

and goths... goths i like. they're free to be themselves and nobody bashes them for it. theyre like their own little world... love em

  • amandaa

It's nothing about the way Emo's (or, you) dress or choose to look. It's that, like previously said, you give yourself a name and than complain about how people label you. You make the world think you're depressed because you're always complaining about how bad your life is.
    If you're an emo.
if you dress like an Emo,you're not an Emo. Emo is an attitude, like Punk....just because you died your hair black doesn't make you an emo.
If you are, there's why I don't like your kind, though you yourself I don't know wethere I'd like or not.

  • Samantha Hollywood

Well, for starters, Ash, for someone who doesn`t believe in labeling, you sure labeled a lot.
But I think ^^ had a good point. It can`t be a look; thats just irrational. It needs to be an attitude if you were to be labeled upon.

    and yeah it's an attitude.
god seriously lets get over the emo stuff
3/4th of myspace is emo, half the world is becoming emo, you are what you are by how you act and dress, it could be true that everyone is a poser but there is the real posers and the wannabe posers then.

sorry i dont mean to offend anyone but EVERYONE in the town is emo now like omg im gonna go dye my hair black like my cold heart and buy these girl jeans and go cut myself in the most obvious places and then brag about it and then write in my diary because its the only thing i can trust. yes thats steriotypical but thats how people in this town are really like.

i'm a goth and all the emo kids around where i live call me names and stuff they call me a wannabe and im like yeah of course im a wannbe i listen to differnet music to you

i have no real problems with emo kids i think that its great that they are in touch with their emotions i just don't get why they have to be little me because i don't like bands like hawthonre heights, taking back sunday, the acedamy is etc.

i mean if they even looked at the names of the bands on my i-pod they would see bands ranging from cradle of filth to H.I.M to nightwish to Bowling for soup to fall out boy

ok so i ranted on a bit sorry

but why do the emo kids where i live feel the need to be little me like this?

I hate being called emo, i hate stereotypes, I am who I am, I've catergorised at school by every that doesn't know me as GOTH and evryone that does know me and hate me as EMO, It's rediculous.

To go back on what i've just said, If i absouloutley had to look at myself with full stereotypicality, i'm goth, but I don;t go around telling people or acting in a different way to what i usually would because "I'm Goth".

However there is one lable I am, well you could say fond of, but only one, and that is that i am a fully blown Mansonite.

Any one that live by stereotypes is pathetic, I also hate conformists, they make me sick, but even worse is hipocritical comforists that don't think they are conformist.

    Thats me done for now.

Wrong. Because not all people who call themselves 'emo' cut themself. Not all people who cut themselves call themself 'emo'. The fact is, people like to make judgements based on their lack of knowledge.

Who cares if people label you, it doesn't make you become what they say. If I was labelled 'emo' or 'goth' I wouldn't care, I'll just act the same way. The people who label and stereotype, are insecure people that have no life.

  • Sean Allen

    " i hate stereotypes"
"Any one that live by stereotypes is pathetic,"
    "I also hate conformists"

You're being hypocritical, brash, and a bit silly. Hating stereotypes is okay, considering it is only an idea. Hating people who fulfill stereotypes is silly, because you yourself fulfill a stereotype, you just don't do it on purpose. Hating people who believe in stereotypes is silly because a good amount of them are just dumb and insecure, and hating people for a general reason like that is silly. Hating conformists is also silly, and using a term like 'conformist' to apply to a bunch of people is also a stereotype. Stop stereotyping people, stop saying you 'hate' things without justification, and don't be hypocritical and then say you hate hypocrites. That's almost too much irony for me to handle.

"you are what you are by how you act and dress,"

    ^^ Dumbest quote EVER!..

It's you are who you are, by being YOURSELF..

People judge you based on how you dress and act, but it sometimes could never match up to someone's personality. I work in an office, and where dress clothes. Does that make me a snob? I don't fit that personality at all. So your arguement is flawed.

Then you go on about there are REAL posers and WANNABEs. People can BE whatever the hell they want to be, you have a problem with that? Are you going to stop them from being who they are? Everyone is a poser. Everyone follows trends.
