"....way to treat the outcasts... slap on a label and make fun of them for being different."

    That's the idea.

I was joking, by the way. I know how these things get taken seriously out of context.

And Elmo - I'm sure he's a real pain in the ass when he's not on set. I could imagine him being quite the diva - he's still very cool though.

Elmo, the coolest diva in town.

okay. i didn't write this. i came across it in someone's blog.
readit,. it might just enlighten you..

"Emo" is not short for "Emotional."

"Emo" does not mean Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional, despite what MTV has lead you to believe in the last few years. "Emo" is not sidebangs, tight pants, and male vocalists who sing like little girls about their failed relationships. "Emo" is not the use of diluted, meaningless metaphors and similes such as "My arms are like pinecones," and most definitely is not the rampant use of words such as "autumn," "heart," "knife," "bleeding," "leaves," and "razorblade."

I just thought I'd clear that up after all of these "definitions" in which I have encountered an unbelievable amount of people who try to pass off their blatantly false pretenses as fact, and are slowly infecting others with their high-horse, holier-than-thou bullshit. Because honestly, with your ridiculous definitions, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Britney Spears are/was "emo bands."

    Now, onto the real definition.

In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo, but personally, I don't quite follow that philosophy.

Often, more recently, this gets intertwined with post-hardcore, and understandably so - that's nothing to make an issue of, since well shit, at least it's close.

Since the late 90s, though, bands have been emerging in the vein of Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, and the thousands of their clones. As far as I can tell, some lazy journalist somewhere, writing an article about them, decided "Well, fuck, no one knows what emo is anyways, so I'll call these bands "emo" - sounds more appealing than bubblegum pop rock..." and the spiral continued downwards into the current amalgomation of bands MTV has told everyone is "emo."

Somehow, people decided that "emo" meant "emotional," which is obviously bullshit, as 99% of bands make music to illicit emotion, which would make "emotional" a completely all-encompassing genre from classical to opera to pop to rap.

PS. Elmo is still cooler than you.

Darien.. how could you call me a retard? And really, this isn't an argument. It's a discussion. Only when people start cussing and throwing chairs like on Jerry Springer is it really an argument. I said my piece on the matter. But it by no means makes me a retard for sharing my view.

I hate stereotypes. Emo. Goth. Chav. They're all a load of crap. I hate it that people get called something and judged, just by the clothes they wear or the music they listen to etc etc. People are people. Not labels.

  • Gizmo

i dont see the reason why people should be labelled,if i had to be labelled it would be goth/emo/punk. but whats the point in labelling someone. its stupid.

I don't like the music I can tell you that. As for people. I try to judge them individually instead of by a stereotype. After I meet you and get to know you I can tell if you fit into that stereotype, but it doesn't impede my judgement of somebody.

people say that because goths and emo's are diffrent. goths are more into creativity and they like to show it. emos are intouch with there feelings. i dont think those stupid jugemental people matter. they are like zombies. they do what sociaty tells them and beeleve what they are told. they are stpid barbie dolls that should be ignored.

Labels are gay, and no one should be hated by people who don't really know them. Emos and goths are whatever stupid labels you give them are people too, and they can be really nice or really funny or the greatest person you'll ever meet. So i personally think its gay that people hate them when they don't even know them

    sorry typo

  • Wings Of Flames

    hmmm.
well i have no problem with 'emos' 'goths' whatever.

I agree that some people do things for attention but that's their personality not a label.
I don't believe in labels because there is no exact label for one person because everyone one of us is different therefore there should be no labels.

They are useless. They have no positive affect on either person so why use them?

This is me. I wear dark clothes like dark mysterious things. But I'm happy. Does that make me goth? no it doesnt. I do get deppressed but only if I ahve to be. I try to stear clear from that kind of stuff. and yes I am called names. 'Emo' 'Goth' "bitch' 'slut' anything under the sun.

Does that automatically make me those things?
    no.
Does that damage my self esteem?
no. Because I choose not to listen to pathetic people.

    Shall i define 'Emo'?
no. cause it does not exist.

    Shall I define 'prep'?
no. because it does not exist.

These things do not exist people.

Look at the BIG picture not the little things you find under your bed or where ever you keep them.

Ignorance is bliss as they say.
But it depends what side of ignorance you choose.

i think emo people have beome related to...
owning a millions things of camo and lepord print and having about 3 and a half inches of makeup on your face =s nd we [as goths] see there is no point in wearing t-shirts desinged for 4 year olds and covering your already beautiful nateral face with make-up =] i think its also beauce you over react about stuff aswell? i have an emo im my artclass atschool and if you dont talk to her for like two seconds and you speak to someone else she'll burst in to tears cause she think you hate her^o) now THAT canget anoying butthats the only emo i know =s so i duno if all of you are like that or what buts thats the type of thing thatpisses everyone off =]

    ^^

Uhhh very easily. Retard. There, happy. That's been explained. Second, an arguement doesn't necessarily mean physical violence, so you're wrong on that note. Yes, you said your piece on the matter, and I refute it. That's how these discussions work.

  • LadyPearl

Discussions aren't discussions without people having different opinions and trying to show Their side.

'Discussions' are arguments, when those discussions are arguing two different sides to a discussion. I know this. My parents played this same line for years.

omg it is so tiring to the eyes to keep seeing the word EMO on the computer screen. 0.o
Get over it . EMO is not a type of people. It means emotional. Everyone is emotional. It is alsoa type of music. Go to an online dictionary, type in EMO and see what it says. It isn't going to say: Panic @the disco, people who wear a certain type of clothes, your neighbor. COME ON PEOPLE. If you believe you are "emo" then believe it. But it isnt a type of people. But if you DO BELIEVE YOU ARE EMO then just tell YOURSELF that and just shut up!

When I see people who are depressed and say they are too "emo" to get help, that is pathetic. Come on people.

^^some girl sayed that about being too emo. Uhhg.

are all self harmers emos or just the ones that only do it and tell everyone to get attention?

  • AGirlWorthFightingFor

self-harmers are not all emos. some self-harmers are metal heads. and the self-harmers that cut for attention or to go along with a percieved trend are just prats or posers.

urban dictionary has some pretty funny definitions of 'emo.' go now!
