People Randomly Voting A 1

  • Arcane Blondie

This has happened to two of my poems. They both had three votes-all fives. Then the rating changes to a four and there has been four votes which means that someone voted a 1. This happening has caused my average rating to drop .2 which I guess isn't a big deal, but its really annoying!! Im bringing this up because I dont know what I should do about it or if there's anything I can do-sorry if this has been brought up before in another post but I wanted to know...

Has this happened to anyone else recently? because this only started happening the last few weeks or so---

Hey there, Kev the moderator here.

this is just my personal opinion, but the ratings system is a very poor indicator of a poems quality. If I were you i'd ignore the rating and focus on the comments, and by that I mean the good ones that actually help you write better.

"great poem, goog work, I love you"

Being an example of a pretty worthless piece of critique.

The ratings system might be abolished anyway so hang tight.

Hey Arcane, It's happened to me several times. USUAlly the votes get reversed.

Someone (I know who) have given a 1 to all my poems and any other poems I submit now. So yeah....she still haven't been banned yet

Yeh happened to me recently on my newsest poem. I dunno maybe it just isn't good, personally I never pay much attention to mine nor anyone else's ratings.

I don't care if I get 3x5 and then a 1. I am aware that my stuff is not to everyone's taste. I also read a LOT of poems on here and am very rarely inclined to give anything a 5, just as I rarely feel anything I've done deserves a 5.

I would much rather someone make a comment about the way it is written.

Does a number really mean that much to you?

Get use to it is my advice the voting system always has been and always will abused while its in is current state.
Dont let it affect you so much its merely a number hey?

yes but kevin so few leave actual critizism with ideas for improvements and saying what didn't work and what did... i belive only Ann Marie has actually left comments worth my time many peope just leave "Awww... i feel the same 5/5"

rating might be abolished.... i like that idea

  • Eibutsina

I do also but at the same time I really dont care about the numerical faceless value people rate my poetry with.

Join a club within the site and get constructive feedback as a means of improvements from members of a club with similar thoughts on poetry as yourself - CC&P would love to have you brian :o)

Far too confrontational a group, for my liking... :-/

I think the voting system should just be removed it would save a lot of problems. Or if not ( and I don't know if this is possible) but only allow a vote with a comment then it's not anonymous, and you can see who voted one, and they can leave a reason for the low vote. Just a thought......

  • Natalie

    I agree with Silver J.

If the rating system isn't removed then have it set up so if someone was to rate, they would HAVE to leave a comment aswell. Or.. somehow have a thing so we can see who has rated the poem and what they rated it.

I don't like being a fascist, but you know, most poeple need a little direction from more evolved souls like myself.

    If the ratings system is kept in place, then I agree it would have to be linked to comments, but, and this is where I step up to my crotch in unknown waters, there would have to be a minimum amount of lines to the comment, say at least 4, and not;

"hey, nice, i feel it, love..........
    .............................................
    ...........................................
    ......................................cUB4"

    What say you all?

The reason i suggest this is because when i comment on a poem, which is rarely because I'm always dealing with scum and villainly, I write a decent amount, because I have something worthwhile to say and this should hold true for most everyone.

  • Natalie

    I like that idea.

But what if they just did this..

    "Hey, Nice poem....
    ...........................
    ............................
    ...........................
    ..please comment mine."

So could we maybe have a thing where we can aprove them. ..But then I guess that might not work either.. Eh. I dunno.

I think it's a great idea. If people do the above, then the serious writers can press the 'complain' link, on the comment, and it can be removed - so it's a win/win situation for people who write because they want to, and not for the glory.

  • Ed or Ian Henderson

The only way to make voting truly fair is to remove the "secret ballot" aspect of it and make the voter known to the poet. That way if they don't leave a comment you can hit back either with a "come on, tell me why?" or you can have what I think would work best and have a "blacklist" feature.

This would work on the principle that any poet getting a repetition of 1-3 rated poems from a single user (or group of users) could nominate that person to a public blacklist. This way, other users could do the same and you'd soon have an idea of people who are just going around handing out bad vibes on a generally good-vibes site.

I just think the whole rating system should go now. Like everyone keeps saying.. It's the comments that matter. So why keep the rating then?

  • Natalie

I've noticed that, Breezy. It happens to ALL the poems that get into the top rated. It only gets on my nerves when it's around a 5.0-4.8 or something, and then with one vote it drops down to like 4.0 ..and they don't leave a comment saying why. I don't care what my rating is, aslong as they leave a comment saying how I can improve it.

But, They never do. And, they never will.

The rating system should just go. ..But that's just MY opinion.

  • Natalie

Exactly. People aren't going to stop downvoting. And no one is going to stop complaining about it.

I actually -use- to love the rating system. But, there's too many -false- rates now.

ED's comment on CC & P "Far too confrontational a group for my liking."

^^^ To begin with you haven't even gotten to know any of the members, not a thing is known about us. May be if you knew the people and interacted, then you would not be making such statements. But then they are all very involved and passionate about writing, poetry, P & Q and have been here for a long time.

    Back on topic:

The voting system is simply a waste of time, we have voted in the past to keep or delete, but the majority wanted it kept. Many sites do not have a vote system, just comments and they do fine. Frankly being without will create less hassle and complaints. If anything is confrontational, it is the voting system on this site.

Steven: When I was invited to join, I did so. I read up on topics and visited member pages and read though a LOT of poems; as I felt obliged to do. And for a while I enjoyed the forums, although I was often left feeling like an outsider posting in a clique's private spot. Hey-ho: that's understandable. But then it got to the point where I'd log-in every day and the top 7 or 8 topics were ALL about how such-and-such is leaving, or how so-and-so is deleting all their poetry because of some specific induhvidual. Seriously. According to the consensus one induhvidual's time was worth all of the group's ire, and I spoke out against it. Which was clearly not welcome.

I'm sure if you've been there a while it's a lovely group. But you are not a welcoming bunch, with a few exceptions. Sorry, but that's just how I feel.

most people will still continue to vote a 5 because they don't want to offend anyone

^^I don't think it will offend anyone if they don't vote a 5. The only reason I want the rating system gone is because of people rating it low but not leaving a comment why. If someones going to vote your poem less than a 5, It'd be nice if they left a comment as to why, what was wrong with the poem. Was the flow off? Was there too many grammer errors. What was it?

Like I said. I don't care what my rating is. But when it starts to drop, I'd like to know why. But no one ever leaves a comment saying why. Except for the -few- nice people. It's a poetry site, but how are you meant to be able to improve if your poetry gets low rates but no one points out what you need to work on to make it better.

^Exactly, I started a new account cause that Same person I've been complaining about still haven't left me and my brand new poems alone.

If the mods. are allowed to do this, I would like them to ban Dead-Deep-Inside, also known as Proud Solider. She doesn't have any poems, only comments and downvotes people in order to change their opinions.

  • Natalie

I'm even thinking of -not- posting my poems anymore. Lately I've just been posting old poems that I hadn't posted yet. But I don't think I'm gonna keep posting. Due to the fact people keep downvoting but won't leave a comment telling me what I need to improve on.

  • XXTruthSeekerXX

Hey Natalie, That's why i created a new account. It may sound pathetic, but I tried to post a new one on my old account and it got a 1 again. >>From the same person. She probably has me on her favorites to Torture. *sigh* oh well, I'm happy with my new account

  • Natalie

I hope her account gets suspended. Cause I love your poems.

She's probably some 12 year old who doesn't even know what poetry really is.

17 rocks. Old enough to drive and old enough to see how many pubs will serve you without asking for ID.

Assuming you're in the UK, that is.

(And then I notice you're from Down Under - which I know bugger all about.)

  • Natalie

    Haha!

We can drive here at 16.

And, We have to be 18 to be able to get into clubs and pubs and all that. But that doesn't stop anyone.

  • Natalie

Exactly. That's why the rating system should go.

  • Ed or Ian Henderson

I honestly just think it needs amending. Mainly in that you can ONLY post a rating if you also leave a comment.

  • Eibutsina

Ed you said we were far too a confrontational group for your liking - care to email me an elaboration on that?

  • Ed or Ian Henderson

Not really, no. I made my feelings plain on this subject. Not just here but in at least one other thread. It's a done topic and I have no intention of hurting anyone's feelings or ever involving myself in other such group malevolence.

I think it's coolest if we all just drop it.

  • TinyDancer46

    Alright Steven, sounds good =)

Back to the topic: I agree with the person above me.

Try commenting other people's work, (good comments that aren't just the short "great 5/5" ones), and guranteed that people will start commenting you too. As for the votes? They will always be pointless. Don't worry about downvoting, it doesn't mean that your poem is any less brilliant. =)
