Spelling Drama (It's different, promise)

Hey, I found an article on Yahoo about people who want to only spell words the way they sound. (Weirdly, "the way they sound" words in the article took me longer to read than the regular ones)

    It's at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060705/ap_on_re_us/simpl_wurdz

I think it's crazy. What do you all think of it?

I think America has ruined English enough as it is with simplifying English by taking letters out of words like colour, or by spelling centre incorrectly. But then language DOES change over time...

But then who is to say that "words" should be spelt (spelled) "wurdz" or "wirdz"? Would "wired" be spelled (spelt) "wyrd"?

    How do we regionalize things?

I take a lift from the bottom of a tower block. An American counterpart might take an elevator from the bottom of a tower block. And written how I say it, it's "Ah tek a lif' from't borrem o' a tarblock." Whereas an American: "I take an ellervader frahm the bardam of a towa blark."

Just so long as txtspk duznt bcum da norm i iz alrite wid just abut nethin.

Personally, I think it is much easier to just follow the rules of the language and learn patterns in spelling from doing so.

Doing that ^^^ has allowed me to be able to spell properly almost 100% of the time since like....grade2.

It's not that difficult to spell, I think some people just have to learn not to be ignorant so as they can learn how.

I agree. There's no real reason why we should change it; also, maybe it's not a bad thing it takes longer to learn. What if we change the spelling and kids start becoming dumb from lack of stimulation. Seems more like a joke to me. Are we really that bored?

I'm not even English myself, but I do agree with you people. It seems as though a lot of changes are occuring in the youth of this day and age. And one of the changes I do not agree with is spelling like a moron.

Yes, because that's not something already happening...

I agree. Although many of you may say that kids today ARE being stimulated, you cannot prove that it is the correct type of stimulation.

The problem in today's society is that parents don't do their job and therefore end up with little moronic drugheads for children.

Now of course this is not to say that ALL of today's kids are on drugs and/or are stupid, but I must admit...there is an overabundance of them.

It makes Americans look very stupid in my opinion. I dont think we should change spelling for the younger generation, because their not grasping it or whatever! It mostly means either... are teachers are crap, and are not teaching them correct, and are failing them, or their parents are not trying hard enough. Their making each generation more stupid. They need to learn how to do things like spell correctly, because honestly it just makes them work harder, makes their brain step up to a challenge, and actually learn something. If we change stuff like that, its just letting these little kids get away with something else. Not letting them learn anything. Its ridicules in my opinion lol.

I mean no offence, here but you ARE taking the piss with that last post, right, Megadrive? Ore yaw knot American...

I don't see how America is getting the blame for poor standards of spelling. I have two cousins who have been through the US education system. One of them attended a US university and got a degree in... wait for it... English! From what I've seen of the US (and bear in mind most of my customers are American or Canadian) the education standard is high. It's just when you stick a kid on the internet they switch their brains off: the anonymity allows them a degree of simple, harmless stupidity that isn't available anywhere else in life.

    Except government.
