Lame discriminatory rule

"The title should start with a letter or number. It is not allowed to use special characters to make your title stand out!"

That's all I have to say.

i completely disagree. i think it's a great rule. this is a poetry site to read and share poetry with others, not a site for "who can make their titles the most annoying" or who can grab more people's attention or have the prettiest title. if these things really matter to you then go to myspace and do those weird things there. if you want to capture the readers eyes with your poems then find interesting titles.

see, see, discriminatory! you're assuming I have a myspace page for some god unknown reason based on some stereotype that only exists in a single cybernetic world.

And I do have other interesting titles, but I like variety, and I like to experiment with different forms that I find beautiful in their own right. It's not about making them 'stand out' for commercial purposes.

Well, then call up prince and ask how he got his little symbol recognized by everybody. When he tells you his little secret you can give it a whirl, and maybe, just maybe, the world will catch on and learn how to pronounce your fancy doodads.

Yes, thank you very much trivializing my entire pointless rant with your sarcasm.

What would the world do without you.

good question, maybe we can take an internet poll?

My point was this. If something seems like it just take too much effort for such a trivial thing, then probably it will, and you should just go with what isn't as difficult.

I would hardly call it "lame discrimination" rather that fair thought out common sense...

That rule has a reason, when people decorated their names it meant that some poems got more attention then others because they have funny symbols next to them that were never nessesary in the first place. If you want to use funny letters, use them in your profile, you don't need to use them in your titles, so follow the rules and stop debating a pointless subject that 1. is not going to change and 2. would cause NO benefit to the rest of the P&Q society.

I'm sorry if i seem rude but seriously, what response did you expect? Not to mention, theres more "descrimination" when you do have funny letters... you have your whole life to be artistic if that it what you wish, but there are better things that can be improved in the site.

I actually think you should be able to put anything you want in the title of you poem. It's up to people to make up their own minds about what looks good enough for them to be interested in a piece of work.

I wouldn't be drawn to a poem that had £$£* in the title.

But i'd like the right to choose.

OK, I can see the point of a poem starting with a number: say, "13 Witches". But unless you're retarded you can put "Thirteen Witches".

As for special characters: I suppose there's a case for monetary ones, because you may have a poem called "$3 Bill" or something. Otherwise: grow up. You don't need them. It may make your screenname look "kewl" or whatever, but in a poem? Seriously, let's have poetry retain a little bit of the purity of written English. You can argue that poetry is about freedom of expression for as long as you like, but let's express it in a way that harks back to simpler times.

    Screw your fleeting internet fads.

    Ed.

    I agree with Ed.

    Whose motorcycle is this?

    It's a chopper baby

    Whose chopper is this?

    It's Ed's

    Who's Ed?

    Ed's dead baby, Ed's dead.

Man, let anyone put anything they want in the title of their poem, and if people are dumb enough to read if because of some funny lines and dots, so be it.

i wanted to put elipses, which are recognised grammatical points, in the title of one of my poems, and the poem was a good poem, and I wasn't trying to be clever for the website, it's how I'd written in my little book, and I couldn't.

    Which sucks.

How a poem is written, whether letters or symbols, or a combination of, should be completely up to the writer.

If a poem is read, whether letters or symbols, or a combination of, should be completely up to the reader.

    How hard is that?
