I was wondering if there were any authors in here as well. Some people that write poems like to write books as well and I need some help writing mine. I have about 11 started. Need some critisims too. Anyway just let me know please.

My simple advice: Stop staring books and start finishing one.

Once you finish once, finish another. Dedicate yourself to getting one story finished at a time.

I have one that's finished and in the process of being published. I just don't have as much time as I would like to work on them. Between work and being a single mom there's not much time left for books. I guess I more want opinions on my work though.

I've written maybe 100 short stories and 4 full length novels. None of which I intend to even consider for publication before I turn 40. But that's not the point...

Always start a story with a clear idea of three things: the personality of your central character, how the story begins, and how it ends. If you've not got those clear in your mind you haven't written a story at all. You've just jotted down ideas. And although ideas are great, they're not stories.

I have ideas but I think I'll just finish collectingpoems for my poetry book.

Yes, I write stories too. For now, more fanfiction than anything else. I like writing science-fiction, but sometimes I delve deeper into human emotions and that sort of thing. And yes, to date I have finished, hum, I think two short stories.

"Always start a story with a clear idea of three things: the personality of your central character, how the story begins, and how it ends."

*Pauses thinking of most recently started story* Shoot, I got that, and a really really vague way of connecting it. Still, the plot seems too loose to follow through with after I get through the begining.

I've yet to come up with a plot for anything but a short story that I've liked enough to follow through with, and unfortunely I don't have a habit of writting a lot of short storys.

//T.L.//: I am a scifi writer. I'm heavily influenced by Robert Heinlein and Terry Pratchett, in that I like the 60s imagery and social impressions, but identify more readily with Pratchett's more philosophical approach, being a comedy writer myself.

If you want, we can swap stories just for the reading experience. :-)

Hey, I start and never finish stories too! Except my main story now is almost done, but still in its "walking skeleton" phase. I know the main events but I still need to hinge them together.

Its a ghost story, sort of. *holds flashlight under face and cackles wickedly*

I'd agree with Ed's first two points, but I've ever thought that to write a good story you have to know where it's going to end.

Of course I can see some sense in this, but, if you have a strong understanding of your characters [the best point Ed made I feel] then the story should write itself and with no set ending you are free to consider and accept or decline all possibilities.

It's the same with music. When you jam out a song, you maybe have a strong idea for a riff [ like a character], and you know how the songs starts....but it's in the playing and exploring that you find the rest of the song, it's the same with my poems and short stories.

But Ed is very old so maybe I am wrong on this, being but a child.

Ed: These are some of my fan-fiction stories, about X-men. I suppose that that falls under the category of sci-fi. From this you can probably get the gist of my writing abilities (bad).

Go for it. Not a novel. Write yourself a short story. Use yourself and your friends as key characters. Write it in a manner where you could read it back to the very same people and captivate them with it. Because if you can write in a way that interests your friends and they say "can you do another one?" you know you have the gift to entertain with the written word. Trust me. :-)
