Something I Heard Today

My nan was telling me today that while she was watching some American news yesterday (cause we live in Canada) that the airlines there are going to start charging people for two airplane seats if they weigh over 180 pounds. Now I have yet to discover all of the facts or if it's even true, but I just thought to myself "Isn't that the most ridiculous thing ever?!" It seems to me like some sort of abuse, but I just don't know which kind or the name of it haha.

I was wondering what you guys thought of this, or if you could tell me if this is really true or not?

    Thanks :)

OMG OMG!!! If this is true! OMG...You know what....WOW!! That is so absurd!!! I can't even comment properly...its sad because in my school....in Phys Ed....you basically get F's if your fat and can't do what the skinny people can..and now airplanes are charging you if your a bit heavier then others...180 isn't even that big I mean....thats soooo wrong..I'm going to check this out...I just would like to see how that airplanes customers percentage just drops

I know what you mean.. 180 is not that big depending on your height and build n whatever. If your gonna have a limit make it like, 250 or something lol.. even though I think that havign a limit at all is stupid

How much is 180 pounds in kilos?
Obesity is, well, common in America... many people will have to pay double. Besides which, that's only 90 kilos. A man with just a little bit of tummy, and not to mention muscle, will weigh at least that.
    That's weird,

It comes as no surprise to me that it is now an offence to be over a certain weight, especially in America where many things thought of as civil liberties are abused every day and most of you pay no attention.

Perhaps fat people should be fined, after all, it is in most cases, by their own actions that they are overweight, and no sudden occurance, they eat mor than they should, they are damaging their health intentionally, using up tax dollars in medical bills to counter their conditions, and then filing lawsuits against McDonalds etc for "making" them overweight.

Or maybe the government has a vested interest in people being of ill health by whatever means available.

^That is one of the most superficial answers I have ever heard. You are right in some cases, as it is true with SOME people, but not everyone who is overweight. You obviously don't know much about it.

You can get fat from not eating enough as well. I'm not trying to start any drama or anything, just wanted to let you know that that's what a lot of people think and it's not always true =)

I'd be most interested in you explaining how someone in a first world country can get fat from eating too little.

Of course I was generalizing, that goes without saying. It is impossible to take into account every case. But wake up, most people who are fat are fat because they eat too much, eat the wrong kinds of foods and don't excercise, it is very simple...hardly anyone has "gland" issues that contribute to their weight gain....or if they do it's the same people who say they can't get out of bed because the sun isn't out and they have SAD disorder...they have a disorder all right.

I was in China recently, and there are very few overweight people there, mainly due to the diet they have, and the fact excercise is part of the culture. The only really fat people I saw were either tourists, or people in Mcdonalds.

I didn't mean like, the poeple starving over in Africa are eventually going to get fat. I was refering to the binging and perging kind of thing. It's also when you eat, and it's not really what you eat, nto all the time, but how much you eat, so yes I do agree with you, but you made it sound so stereotypical that it sorta made me mad, but I know where you're coming from. But you'd be surprised to how many fat people eat healthy.. some of them healthier than those who aren't fat. I guess it's also about havign the knowledge but not using it or sticking with it.. but I didn't start this thread to discuss obesity and weight loss. lol. Sorry for getting off topic.

Sounds like the airline just wants to make money.

haha, its kinda sad cause I bet more then half the people in America weigh more than 180. the the person above said...airlines want more money and ironiclly the airlines give us sugary snacks and have meals for us. lol and they get our money there.

  • Lovely Bones

lol yeah. I also heard it was because there was too much weight in the airplane, which was causing them to use more fuel which is really expensive now-a-days. It's so wierd, but I'm thinking that it may be some ploy to either make America healthier, or just take our money.

Well I can't really picture the size of a person weighing 180 pounds, but if they are going to take up 2 seats shouldn't they pay for 2? The person next to someone would surely prefer to not have someone else taking up half of their own!

Bizarre. But in a way quite logical. Although 180lbs seems a little lightweight. Hockey teams are going to have to pay a fortune to get to road games... unless they go by road.

I weight in at 210lbs, and by my own admission and laziness am 30lbs overweight. But when I lose the 30lbs (lost 5 already - yes, I was 35 over) I think I'd be a bit chagrined to be forced to cough up an extra ticket fee.

If we're going to start charging "fat" people for 2 tickets whether they take up 2 seats or not, then surely we should start working the law of averages? I mean, I can put my son and daughter neatly onto that spot next to me, so technically they're going for free. Right?

omg...that's ridiculous...i'm like 180 already and i'm not even that fat...it's mainly muscle weight...though i could use a diet=(...that is totally unfair if they do that!

Thank the heavens for a corset. Wear it, but don't force it. :-)

  • Lovely Bones

Yeah I think 280 is waaay better then 180. The average weight for a person is like 150-170 isn't it? I think a lot of even the thinnest people are over that.

  • Jessica

    Duuude, if its true.
    That's totally not fair.
I hate that people are mean to overweight people. People are perfect the way that they are. If they have a problem with people who weigh over 180 pounds then maybe they should just make the planes more safe. That's what i think.

    Gosh I hate jerkfaces.
    Plus chubby/overweight people are funn.
they're mooshii and funn to poke.
It's just more to love. =D

What if you are really tall, and not fat?

    Haha...

I mean, if you're 6'8 chances are you weigh up into the 200's..

  • Lovely Bones

Dwelt, I've seen a 500 pound person, and I don't think they'd even consider going on a plane.. they'd have to pay double anyways. :)

  • Chelsey

You know ...Sunny has a point......ABout the tall thing..I'm 15 and I'm 5'9 probably will end up at 5'10 and 5'11....Whenever I go get a physical I always get teary eyed to see my weight and my doctor is like "hunny you are not fat at all...Tall people way a lot and plus your active which makes muscle weigh more then fat".....and everyone tells me I'm not fat too...so heres my issue now..if I'm still growing...and end up 180 lbs....its because I'm tall and not fat....they'd make me pay too??? I don't think so! Shoot..I'd walk to wherever I got to go...hey..I'd probably lose weight to fly home without paying extra

  • Lovely Bones

I know hwo you feel Chelsey-Lynn. I'm 16 and almost 5'10. Although I do have a lot of muscle, I also have a lot of fat, too. Some people may describe you as big but they are talking about your height, not your weight.

^ 180 is not that big, unless you're like, 4 feet tall.
