Good metaphors work. Personal metaphors leave a poem open to interpreation. Which I personally think is more important to making your work personal and unique.

But then poetry is so like a car that fails to start on a winter morning it's comparable to the scent of rotting oranges in a warehouse in Baslow. Right?

I always think of metaphor for my poems and some other says that metaphor really works on it . it adds color and life to a poem and like what other says it really touch the heart of a reader by the use of metaphor...

Metaphors help what the poems trying to say or tell you about stand out. It helps whtever emotion be said but not too upfront more subtle.

Poems without metaphors are generally very basic poetry so yes I agree, use them, experiment and see where you go from there.
